About The Role:
Reporting to the Chief People Officer (CPO), the Director of Total Rewards is a new, high-impact role responsible for implementing and managing compensation and benefits programs that align with the company's growth strategy and ensure our continued competitiveness within the pharma/biotech industry. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a dedicated professional to drive meaningful impact, excellence, and innovation in Total Rewards.
Responsibilities:
Compensation
- Support the design and execution of compensation frameworks, including job evaluations, market analysis, salary ranges, etc., to ensure market competitiveness and meet business needs.
- Collaborate with the CPO and CEO on Compensation Committee materials analysis, planning, and preparation, including partnering with our external Compensation and Benefits Independent Advisory team.
- Lead a thorough job leveling and career path analysis. Develop career paths and processes for hiring, rewards, and professional development. Manage change management for roll out of outputs and ongoing governance.
- In partnership with the CPO, develop, evolve, and own compensation and equity plans.
- Ownership for equity frameworks and allocation, including regular equity utilization projections.
- Create and manage new bonus and severance plans.
- Lead and manage the annual compensation planning process (merit, bonus), including evolving processes, compensation philosophy, process facilitation, training, and education materials.
- Evaluate and propose a business case for implementing a rewards management tool.
- Provide support and input on compensation programs and projects. Provide technical expertise to inform processes, projects, reporting, and analytics initiatives within Total Rewards.
- Communicate the company's total rewards philosophy, programs, and changes to ensure understanding and buy-in across all organizational levels, including pay transparency.
- Serve as a subject-matter expert for Total Rewards for HRIS deployments and optimizations. Manage compensation-related design and configuration decisions.
Benefits
- Oversee our benefits program's selection, offerings evolution, and annual Open Enrollment administration.
- Ownership for driving a PEO transition to Septerna’s own employee benefits program, including effective change management
- Integrate new benefits with the relevant technology systems, such as the Company’s new HRIS and benefit’s broker Open Enrollment portal
- Collaborate with and manage relationships with external benefits providers, brokers, and vendors to negotiate contracts, monitor performance, and optimize service delivery.
- Educate employees on benefits offerings and serve as the main point of contact for education and issue resolution.
Compliance and Administration
- Ensure all compensation and benefits programs comply with federal, state, and local laws and industry regulations.
- Ensure compliance with SOX, internal and external audit requests, and all relevant government reporting.
- Complete and submit required compensation and benefits surveys with Aon and other resources to ensure receipt of the most current and competitive total rewards
- Maintain policies and procedures related to Total Rewards.
- Recommend and implement process improvements.
- Generates regular compensation and benefits analytics to support decision-making by People & Culture and management. Partner with the People Operations Director to feed data into a monthly dashboard.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), or similar designation is a plus.
- 15 years of progressive experience in Total Rewards in pharma, biotech, or life sciences.
- Strong experience supporting public companies and partnering with the Finance and Legal functions to meet reporting and legal requirements.
- Excellent Excel and analytical skills, with the ability to leverage data to drive decision-making and strategy.
- Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality results.
- Experience with Rewards Management tools and HRIS integration.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and concisely to all levels of the organization.
- Proactive, solutions-oriented approach to identifying challenges and implementing strategic and scalable solutions.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in South San Francisco, CA is $210,000 - $230,000. Individual pay may vary based on additional factors, including, and without limitation, job-related skills, experience, work location and relevant education or training. Septerna's compensation package also includes benefits, stock options, and annual target bonus for full-time positions.
