What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Kennel Technician position at Sequoia Humane Society?
REPORTS TO: Kennel Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Lead Kennel Technician is a key member of the management team and is expected to work collaboratively with the Kennel Manager, Customer Service Manager and Executive Director to perform a wide variety of functions necessary to operate the animal shelter. Duties and responsibilities of the Kennel Manager, Lead Kennel Technician and Customer Service Manager will overlap considerably and the person filling each position will need to be cross-trained and able to handle diverse tasks. In addition, the Lead Kennel Technician works closely with and supports the Kennel Manager in overseeing the daily operation of the kennels, cattery, treatment room, outdoor runs and related areas and is responsible for maintaining a healthy, safe and sanitary facility for shelter animals and the public. The Lead Kennel Technician, in conjunction with other management staff participates in making decisions about animal admissions, adoptions, and other outcomes. The Lead Kennel Technician will also:

Maintain standards of excellence for animal care and establish efficient and effective animal care procedures.

Have the ability to safely and confidently handle a variety of animals, including dogs and cats of different sizes and temperaments.

Feed animals according to established schedules and dietary needs.

Clean and sanitize animal enclosures and shelter facilities.
-
Provide shelter dogs with training, enrichment activities and exercise.

Organize training for Animal Care Specialists and Humane Society volunteers.

Work with the Kennel Manager to evaluate and determine the adoptability of incoming animals according to health, behavior, and temperament. Make recommendations as to whether any particular animal is a suitable candidate for admission to the shelter.

Evaluate all animals daily. Examine animals for signs of illness or unsoundness.

Vaccinate, deworm, microchip and medicate animals as required.

Provide appropriate information and maintain accurate records on each animal.

Insure that animals are transported to/from veterinary appointments (spay/neuter surgeries, etc.)

Track, reconcile and prepare for payment kennel, adoption and pet store payables.

Track, record and reconcile veterinarian’s bills and related records for payment by the bookkeeper.

Maintain an orderly storeroom/stockroom and inventory of animal care equipment, drugs and supplies.

Perform adoption counseling and provide animal behavior advice to/for the general public.

Maintain the SHS vehicle in clean and safe condition.
In addition, the Lead Kennel Technician assists and supports the work of other managers and the Executive Director in order to carry out goals and desires of the Board of Directors of the Sequoia Humane Society.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Certified Vet Assistant (CVA) preferred

Love for and experience in the care and handling of animals.

A minimum of two (2) years experience working with a variety of animals in a shelter or veterinary hospital facility.

A minimum of two (2) years experience in supervising and training employees and/or volunteers.

A valid California Driver’s License with a good driving record.
-
Commitment to the long-term success of the Sequoia Humane Society.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
-
Knowledge of humane animal handling, restraint and confinement procedures; characteristics of various animal breeds and familiarity with the symptoms of common animal diseases and their control; safety precautions of working around animals.

Experience evaluating and documenting animal health and temperament.
-
Knowledge of and experience implementing proper procedures for examining, vaccinating, and medicating animals.

Ability to maintain accurate case records, to understand and follow regulations governing the impoundment, release and euthanasia of animals, and to deal with the public courteously and effectively.

Knowledge of best practices for maintaining safe and sanitary kennels/catteries.

Knowledge of basic record keeping procedures, offices practices and equipment, basic mathematics and cashiering.

Ability to work efficiently under pressure, make rapid decisions based upon interpretation of rules and policies, and relay instructions in emergency situations.

Ability to prioritize and organize the work of self and others.

Ability to maintain positive relationships with co-workers, and the general public.

Ability to work in teams and make collaborative decisions.

Ability to perform general duty labor for extended periods, including under adverse weather conditions and with continuous exposure to noise.

Ability to lift and handle 50 lbs (live animals/food).

Ability to supervise, inspire and maintain morale of employees and volunteers.

Capability to assume managerial responsibilities in the kennel manager's absence.
NOTE: Daily reporting hours and days of work vary according to the shelter’s operating schedule. This position will require weekend and occasional overtime and holiday work.
