Truck Driver Job Description

 

Position Overview:

SCI, Inc. Delivery Truck Drivers are responsible for delivering products to SCI, Inc. customers in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi.  In this role, the individual is responsible for adhering to necessary safety and legal procedures of working.  Driver will be provided with a truck, all safety equipment, uniforms, and benefits.  Driver is expected to work Monday through Friday and will return home every day.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Drives company trucks to customers and unloads our chemicals. 

o   Most customers have a forklift and/or other equipment to unload the product (drums, tote tanks, pallet, cylinders, etc).  All SCI, Inc. trucks are equipped with liftgates and electric pallet jacks to unload when customer is not able.

o   Driver will be responsible for assisting warehouse employees when help is needed loading trucks.  It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all orders are correctly packaged, labeled neatly, and safely secured in the truck before departing.   This duty is critical.  Failure to follow this procedure could result in a write-up or termination as it is critical to our safety, our customers’ safety, risks contamination, quality of service, and/or injury.

  • Must have knowledge and comply with, all applicable federal, state, local and company rules and regulations that are in accordance with the accepted principals of the safe operation of a hazardous cargo tank motor vehicle.
  • Must have knowledge and comply with, the proper methods of loading and unloading for the various cargos to be transported.
  • Report to logistics at the specified time and maintain contact with logistics and dispatch offices as required.
  • Complete driver daily logs and all necessary delivery tickets, trip reports, fuel reports, damage reports, and other paperwork required by company, to be turned in as instructed
  • Comply with loading/unloading procedures for the appropriate cargos being transported.
  • Follow company guidelines in regards to acceptable conduct when dealing with customers, fellow employees, and the motoring public.
  • Comply with all company safety and performance standards.
  • Represent the Company to our customers, the public and the trucking industry in a professional manner at all times.
  • Maintain records for compliance with state and federal regulations, including driver's logs, records of fuel purchases, mileage records and other records.
  • Report all accidents immediately involving driver and/or company equipment, regardless of the damage to manager.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Documentation Required 

·         Must have a Class A Hazmat Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement and other appropriate endorsements and state requirements and be carried in truck cab while driver is in service.

  • Must have a current Medical Examiner's Certificate, under the requirements of 49 CFR, Section 391 43-49 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation
  • Adhering to the compliance of all legal and safety procedures of working.

o    Safety glasses must be worn in the warehouse at all times.

o   Chemical suit must be worn along with safety glasses, hard hat and face shield, and gloves while transferring or unloading hazardous materials from tanks trucks, storage tanks, totes and drums.

o   Ensure that no unauthorized personnel enter the warehouse or shed area. (no unauthorized personnel should be inside the gate at SCI at any time.)

·         Participating in training/continuing education as needed (such as OSHA/Forklift/etc.)

 

Skills and Specifications

  • Knowledge of the safety and legal documentation processes for handling related warehousing activities and materials.
  • Ability to effectively manage time, resolve crises and decision making.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with customers, other employees, and suppliers.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Dependable, detail oriented and deadline sensitive.

 

Education, Qualifications and Physical Requirements:

  • High School Degree or a General Equivalency Diploma and experience 2 to 3 years truck driver experience.
  • Knowledge of all applicable DOT and Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Be able to work any shift on any day
  • Able to hook and unhook trailers when required
  • Able to drive for up to 11 hours and work a total of 14 hours, while transporting hazardous materials and sitting for extended periods of time in a truck tractor.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and able to read and speak the English language
  • Must meet all qualifications in 49 CFR Section 391.11(b)(1) & (2) of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Able to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Able to walk, bend, reach, push, stoop, squat, climb, grasp, lift and handle heavy equipment as necessary to ensure safety during the hooking and dropping processes of tractor/ trailer combinations as required under 49 CFR Sections 396. 11-15 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Normal range of hearing, vision and smell.
