Director of Special Education
RSU 1 seeks a dynamic, innovative, and dedicated Special Education Director beginning with the 2025-2026 school year. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students and their families.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the district’s special education programs and services
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to special education
- Work collaboratively with staff and families to develop individual education plans that support the diverse needs of students
- Provide leadership and professional development opportunities for special education staff
- Serve as a liaison between the school district, families, and community organizations
- Collaborate with school administrators to assist with special education planning and programming
- Manage local and federal budget systems for all department programs and staff
- Oversee the research, review, and adoption of Tier 3 and special education curriculum to support students and teachers not accessing Tier 1 instruction
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership or related field
- Valid Maine Certification in Special Education Administration (030)
- Three to five years of teaching experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Proven ability to lead and collaborate effectively with diverse groups
