The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking residential Academic Instructors to be part of the 2025 UMF Summer Upward Bound (UB) Program. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with high school students in innovative and creative ways. Instructors will teach in key subject areas, including math, science, English, world languages, and career and college development. The role offers the chance to advance students’ academic knowledge and foster skills that support long-term success—encouraging new learning approaches, perseverance, and the development of habits that will serve them in higher education and beyond.
Compensation: This full-time, seasonal position offers a weekly salary of $845.21. A typical work schedule runs from Sunday night through Friday afternoon. This position is grant-funded and contingent upon the continued availability of external funding.
Summer program dates: June 17, 2025, through July 25, 2025. Instructors are required to commit to a minimum of six (6) weeks, with the possibility of an additional week.

Position Responsibilities
- Coordinates pretests for placement as needed.
- Develops course curricula and daily lesson plans.
- Delivers daily lessons to students in multiple course sections via project-based learning, cooperative learning, lectures, group discussions, and workshops.
- Provides timely feedback to students on their work via written comments and individual meetings.
- Adapts curriculum to meet the needs of all students who need individualized instruction.
- Tutors students individually and in small groups during nightly study sessions and Common Time.
- Delivers Upward Bound Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum via Advisor Group facilitation on a weekly basis.
- Initiates and facilitates social and cultural activities.
- Provides students companionship, support, and positive role modeling.
- Supervises bedtime hours and sleeps in the dorm except on weekends and nights off.
- Writes comprehensive evaluations of each student to provide specific feedback about course performance and academic strengths and weaknesses.
- Participates in staff meetings to discuss program progress, planning, and student concerns.
Required Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree (expertise in one of the following areas: Mathematics, Science, English and Composition, World Languages, or Career Development/College Access)
- Teaching experience (minimum student teaching)
- Teacher Certification
- Experience working with high school students
- Personal experience with, or understanding of, the challenges faced by low-income students who will be the first in their families to attend college
