Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager on behalf of our client to lead the talented commercial lines underwriting team. This critical role will be responsible for overseeing the underwriting process, ensuring the quality and profitability of the Commercial Lines portfolio, and cultivating strong relationships with our valued independent agency partners. Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor the commercial lines underwriting team, providing guidance, performance evaluations, and fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting policies and guidelines to ensure consistency, compliance, and alignment with company standards and risk appetite.
- Review and approve complex underwriting submissions, meticulously assessing risks and ensuring adherence to profitability and risk management criteria.
- Analyze market trends, competitor activities, and emerging risks to identify opportunities for portfolio growth, product enhancement, and competitive advantage.
- Play a key role in the development and successful launch of multiple state product expansions, contributing to the company's strategic growth initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with sales and marketing teams to develop and execute effective strategies to attract and retain commercial lines clients, maximizing market penetration.
- Conduct regular audits of underwriting files to ensure meticulous adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Continuously monitor the performance of the commercial lines portfolio, proactively identifying areas of concern and implementing corrective actions to optimize profitability and minimize risk.
- Stay abreast of industry developments, regulatory changes, and evolving best practices to ensure the company's underwriting practices remain cutting-edge, compliant, and competitive.
- Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for the underwriting team, empowering them to enhance their skills, knowledge, and professional growth.
- Cultivate and maintain strong, productive relationships with agency partners, promoting the company's products and services and fostering mutual success.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field; professional designations such as CPCU or ARM are highly preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial lines underwriting, with at least 2 years in a proven managerial or leadership role.
- Multi-state underwriting experience is strongly preferred.
- Exceptional analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex risks, evaluate exposures, and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, brokers, and team members.
- In-depth knowledge of commercial lines insurance products, underwriting principles, rating methodologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully managing, motivating, and developing a high-performing team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to quickly learn and utilize company-specific software applications.
- Experience launching new commercial lines products and/or expanding into new territories is a significant advantage.
- Prior experience with reinsurance and facultative placement is preferred.
