The Counselor will deliver direct substance abuse counseling to adult clients at Palmer Correctional Facility.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Associates degree in human services or a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a related field
• Ability to pass a drug screening and State of Alaska background check (no felony convictions)

• Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills
• Punctuality and consist reliability in reporting to work
• Understanding of being trauma informed and awareness of cultural differences
• The ability to:
  • Be a team player, demonstrating motivation, exercising discretion and dependability
  • Build rapport with clients and staff while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Maintain confidentiality and treat everyone with dignity and respect
• Basic computer skills and fluid use of electronic communication tools

Job responsibilities:

• Participate in admissions team decisions, advising the team of pertinent information
• Conduct screenings, provide referrals to treatment, and facilitate ASAM level 0.5 Early Intervention psychoeducational substance abuse services at both the Palmer Correctional Center and Mat-Su Pretrial facilities
• Coordinate client care with counseling team, manage client cases, and provide supports which promote the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the client
• Participate in treatment team meetings, advising the team of any change in client needs and/or service availability
• Communicate and document client progress toward recovery goals
• Advocate for clients; educating them regarding substance abuse issues and it’s impact
• Work with clients to assess needs and potential barriers to success
• Remote work at local correctional facilities, in the community as well as work at the main office
