Job Description
A Youth Peer Support Specialist is responsible for providing support and guidance to young individuals
who are facing mental health challenges or experiencing emotional distress. They use their own lived
experiences to connect with and empower youth, offering a unique perspective and understanding.
These specialists serve as role models, helping young individuals develop coping skills, build
resilience, and navigate various systems and resources. They may facilitate support groups, provide
one-on-one mentoring, and advocate for youth within the mental health system. Their goal is to
promote recovery, wellness, and positive youth development.

Essential Job Functions
- Serves as role model for clients by sharing own recovery process and teaching effective coping
- Assists clients in development of recovery plan, including psychiatric advance directives and
- Provides education with a focus on illness management, peer support, and youth culture.
- Provides advocacy services on behalf of client, enhancing relationships with community
- Implements and coordinates recovery plans for individual clients in assigned population group,
- Provides case management, resourcing, service collaboration for individual clients as extension
- Serves as an active member of the client’s treatment team, including participation in team
- Informs supervisor, and other members of treatment team as indicated, of issues/concerns
- Maintains accurate, thorough records on all assigned cases and uses documentation to assist
- Participates in required trainings to maintain certification.
- High school diploma or General Equivalent Diploma (GED) certificate
- Have lived experience
- Eighteen (18) years of age and is not older than thirty-five (35) years of age
- Attest to one year recovery as defined by Alcohol and Drug Treatment entity (AODE)
- Completion of Kentucky's Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual
- Completes, maintains, and submits to DBHDID, documentation of a minimum of six (6) hours of

- Position requires lifting of 20 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of items
- Normal work tasks may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissue.
