Salary and Benefits
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is a non-exempt, hourly position. The DSP may work full-time or part-time, typically supporting 4-6 individuals in residential settings or up to 10 individuals in periodic programs.
The DSP assists with day-to-day activities, including personal care, housekeeping, recreational activities, transportation, community integration, shopping, citizenship, and other activities of daily living.
Job Responsibilities
The DSP's primary responsibility is to provide direct support within individual service plans. This includes socialization, health maintenance, medication administration, and skill or behavioral development.
The DSP assists with:
- Attending orientation and ongoing training as directed;
- Participating in monthly staff meetings;
- Working scheduled hours, arriving on time, and staying on shift until replacement arrives;
- Filling in for other shifts where required without causing unapproved overtime;
- Working together with others, valuing others' contributions, being courteous, communicating openly, listening, and showing respect to others;
- Complying with all established safety policies, procedures, and practices and reporting all work-related injuries to the supervisor;
The DSP may also transport individuals into the community, drive safely and according to local laws, assure proper use of safety equipment, report accidents to appropriate authorities immediately, and report accidents and safety concerns immediately to supervisor or maintenance personnel.
Required Skills and Qualifications
The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required to perform the job:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred;
- Six months of experience in human services preferred;
- Must be 18 years of age;
- Valid driver's license in good standing;
- Car registration and vehicle insurance if providing transportation for individuals receiving services;
- All state-required training and certification completed in mandated timeframes.
Physical Requirements
The DSP will exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
This role requires heavy work, which involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects, as well as frequent bending, kneeling, and standing.
