The City of Seward is recruiting for a Firefighter/EMT. This is a Kelly Schedule position.Under general or immediate supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief and/or other supervisory personnel within the Fire Department, performs various duties to protect life, property, and the environment including; to respond to emergency medical, fire, rescue, and hazardous material alarms and public service calls; drives, operates, and maintains firefighting, emergency medical, and associated vehicles, apparatus, and equipment; performs the full range of fire suppression duties; renders medical aid and lifesaving assistance; participates in fire prevention and education programs including fire safety inspections of buildings; conducts and participates in firefighting, fire prevention, public education, disaster preparedness, and related training activities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
DETAILED WORK ACTIVITIES: Provides excellent customer service by establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.Keeps clear, accurate, and concise records and prepares reports for use by administration.Performs flow tests on fire hydrants; and operates pumps and hydrants.Monitors communications equipment and broadcasts messages.Serves as the initial on scene incident commander until relieved by a superior officer. Records training logs and emergency incidents into the records management systems.Drive and operate fire department and other city department and agencies apparatus and equipment.Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints, and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.May be required to work rotating shifts, on-call duties, and extended hours in emergency situations.Assists with formulating related training; performs in-service training; and may conduct classes for volunteer and/or career personnel. Attends training sessions and seminars to maintain certifications and current best practice.Supports the policy and direction of the Fire Chief, Departmental Policies and Guidelines, and the City of Seward’s City Code, Policies and Administrative Directives.Ensures all apparatus and equipment are fueled, stocked, clean, accounted for and operational. Actively participates in Recruitment and Retention of volunteer Firefighters.Responds to calls for: fire alarms, fires, rescues, emergency medical services, and other calls for emergency and non-emergency services and renders aid and serves as an administration representative to volunteer firefighters.Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects.Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action.Keeps fire station, equipment, and grounds in a clean and in an orderly condition.Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items and maintain pre-fire plans for target hazards.Assist building & fire inspection division with Fire & Life safety inspections as needed. Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting, and monitoring as outlined in the City's Safety Handbook.Individual must function well as a team member as well as work independently. Individual must be able to tolerate and function effectively under stress, be able to work in a paramilitary environment, and accept constructive criticism in a mature fashion. Individual must be able to maintain confidentiality in the performance of one's duties.Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Performs public relations functions between City and various civic agencies and/or other fire departments; and performs fire education functions for the public at various locations and for various age groups.Gives presentations to groups of children and/or adults regarding the risks of fires, falls, and other hazards, as well as informing them of the best ways to minimize the risks of such events.Organizing, planning, and participating in events to accomplish the goal of educating the public about fire and life safety, and other hazards and disasters. May be tasked with on-call after hours standby. Performs related duties as assigned.
