Job Description
Produce Staff
Purpose: To stock and display fresh produce while providing prompt, friendly, helpful customer service to help meet department goals for sales, margin, labor productivity and customer service.
Status: Full or Part-time. Weekend hours required for all staff. Reports to Produce Manager
Pay Level: III
Responsibilities:
- Daily replenishment of displays by rotating and culling; keeping organic, conventional, and transitional separate. Build attractive, safe displays following best produce retailing practices.
- Maintain produce room, cooler, and sales floor tidy, and produce displays tidy and fully stocked
- Prep produce (lettuce, dates, melons, cherry tomatoes. . . )
- Assist customers in a prompt, courteous manner, exceeding their expectations for service.
- Dispose of produce that is unsuitable for sale by selling/giving to deli, or throwing (inedible) produce in trash or compost. Sell edible produce at discount by doctoring-up, repackaging, and labeling
- Keep back stock produce stored properly and tidily.
- Use equipment safely. Advise manager of equipment repair and replacement needs
- Receiving deliveries from distributors and growers as directed
- Ensure produce quality
- Promote produce by sampling
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of products through research, using produce reference book and tasting small samples of new produce
- Participate in inventories as needed
- Provide constructive feedback to manager and centralized buyer as necessary
- Attend department and storewide meetings
- Closing duties include serving as Floor Warden in case of fire
- Perform other tasks as assigned by produce manager
- Wash hands routinely, frequently and properly to ensure the safety of our products per Seward Co-ops Hand Washing Policy.

Qualifications:
Essential
- Reliable, predictable attendance
- Excellent customer service skills
- English proficiency
Functional
- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach, squat and walk for extended periods of time per shift
- Bend and lift loads, not to exceed 50 pounds. Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Environmental exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers, ovens, freezer, outdoors, etc.)
- Ability to freely access all areas of the store including offices, sales floor, back stock areas, and walk-in coolers and freezers.
- Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the store generally weighing up to 50 pounds
- Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
- Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
- Ability to work in a cold and damp environment
Preferred
- Multilingual a plus
- Experience with retail produce or farming
- Computer proficiency
- Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment
- Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
Salary : $28,400 - $36,000
