What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Advocacy and Organizing position at SF Parent Coalition?
San Francisco Parent Coalition seeks a Director of Advocacy and Organizing to lead our organizing program, co-develop our policy initiatives and campaigns with families, and oversee community outreach. This role is pivotal in driving our mission to ensure equitable and excellent public schools in San Francisco. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and Managing Director, overseeing community organizing, partnerships, advocacy, policy, campaign strategy, communications, membership, and volunteer management.
This position spends 20-30% (depending on the year and time of year in relation to election cycles) of its time on work under the umbrella of our sister affiliate organization, SF Parent Action, 501(c)(4), which mobilizes the community to support and elect student-centered school board candidates and pass ballot measures that benefit students and public schools.
Key Responsibilities :
- Issue and Advocacy Leadership (25%) :
- Develop and implement campaign plans to engage parents, educators, and community members around crucial educational issues and policy changes.
- Design mobilization strategies utilizing digital and mobile platforms to expand reach and engage new audiences.
- Organize initiatives such as days of action and voter engagement.
- Conduct thorough analyses of current policies and operations within the San Francisco Unified School District to identify areas for improvement.
- Engage with various stakeholders, including SFUSD staff, school board members, elected officials, state education bodies, and local community groups to synchronize policy efforts.
- Oversee our Board of Education program by ensuring appropriate staff members analyze agendas and policies, summarize relevant points, and develop plans to activate our parent community at meetings.
- Parent Organizing and Leadership (25%) :
- Maintain and further develop the SF Parents’ parent organizing and school-based parent leadership model through robust education, training, parent workshops, and outreach programs.
- Create and deliver programming that empowers parents and activists to develop their own leadership capacity and power.
- Lead efforts to grow the organization’s reach across San Francisco with multiple outreach strategies, including events and school recruitment.
- Oversee multi-tiered parent outreach efforts, aligning with advocacy campaigns and leadership opportunities.
- Develop and lead online and in-person engagement opportunities such as webinars and training sessions to educate and empower communities.
- Oversee the creation and distribution of online and in-person parent resources, ensuring that materials are parent-friendly and support multilingual community needs.
- Manage the volunteer program and support event planning.
- Oversee the Parent Leadership Council and other advisory groups.
- Team Management (20%) :
- Provide coaching, training, and technical assistance to the Community Organizing team (currently a team of 3), assisting them in developing their skills and leveraging organizing tools.
- Support the team in tracking and reporting all interactions and engagement activities through daily reporting and data entry.
- Communications (15%) :
- Ensure all campaigns, advocacy, parent organizing, outreach, and leadership work are accurately represented across communication channels, including websites, social media, newsletters, and press releases.
- Directly contribute to the content development of newsletters and press releases, incorporating insights from parent leader research and advocacy.
- Influence and Coalition Building (10%) :
- Lead and support collaboration with school partners and outreach.
- Establish relationships with community-based organizations, local businesses, and neighborhood groups.
- Participate in state-level advocacy efforts as needed.
- Represent SF Parents in external meetings and press engagements.
- Organizational Operations (5%) :
- Create, manage, and oversee the organizing team's calendar of events and work plans.
- Manage organizational systems and staff to ensure effective execution of advocacy and organizing priorities.
- Prepare organizational dashboards and strategic planning metrics updates.
- Participate in team meetings, one-on-ones, and strategic planning sessions as needed.
