Role and Responsibilities: Under the direction of management or senior staff, the Tax Accountant is responsible for the preparation of federal and state tax returns, as well as 1099 and withholding tax processing. This position also supports other areas of General Accounting with upgrades of system software, and automation of processes/procedures. Your responsibilities will include:
- Prepare and file the federal and state income tax returns and all supplemental schedules relating to expenses, reserves, investments, and specialized forms for foreign investments.
- Calculate and report deferred tax assets and liabilities, including the preparation of note # 9 in the financial statements (extensive knowledge of the NAIC Accounting Practices and Procedures manual and SSAP # 101 preferred).
- Prepare quarterly projections of taxable income and process payments of federal and state income taxes.
- Prepare internal monthly and annual tax reports including the Board of Directors’ report for capital gains/losses, estimate versus final tax comparisons, historical comparisons, and detailed tax rate reconciliations.
- Calculate and remit federal and state tax withholding, including filing quarterly and annual reports. This also includes researching and keeping updated on tax law and rate changes.
- Import and reconcile 1099s for directors, vendors, attorneys, charter committee policies, and any additional miscellaneous payees using the OneSource system.
- File annual state and municipal premium tax returns for the company, requiring knowledge of tax laws for each of our thirteen states. Process related quarterly payments and other miscellaneous regulatory filings and fees.
- Maintain the guaranty fund assessment spreadsheets, including the calculation of the amortization of the assessments and usage of the credits against premium taxes.
- Process book and tax depreciation monthly and prepare annual reports.
- Maintain property tax asset lists and coordinate with external property tax manager for payment of invoices and assessments.
- Integrate data files, spreadsheets, VB programs, and database queries to prepare various accounting reports related to premiums, such as Schedule T and the State Pages. This also includes miscellaneous requests from upper management.
- Prepare and file the federal and state income tax returns and all supplemental schedules relating to expenses, reserves, investments, and specialized forms for foreign investments.
- Serve as backup to the Financial Accountant for managing the DA Pension Plan accounts. This includes calculating accrued interest for inclusion in the interim and annual financial statements and producing year-end (6/30 fiscal) statements for all pension plan funds.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Business/Finance/Math
- Successful completion of the Wonderlic Test
- Basic skills using Excel
