REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION LEVEL: |
Bachelor’s degree. Must be endorsed or willing to complete endorsement for 80022 Lakota Activities/Culture. |
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: |
One to three years of teaching experience preferred. Experience working with Native American students and their families. |
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: |
Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination and hearing; intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, dialing, filing, fingering, grasping, indexing, inserting, keyboarding, lifting, driving, and speaking are required. |
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: |
Must have an ability to acquire a comprehensive working knowledge of school district policies, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with Native American students and families. Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and history, as well as resources to assist Indigenous students with school completion. Strong Lakota language and knowledge. Must have a valid South Dakota teacher’s license and/or ability to obtain teacher certification upon selection. Possess a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. |
CERTIFICATION
This position requires a valid South Dakota teaching certification with the Lakota Language and Culture endorsement and one of the following endorsements: Secondary Advanced History, Secondary Intermediate Social Science, or Secondary South Dakota Indian Studies.

Interested in becoming a contract teacher but don't hold a traditional teaching degree?
The South Dakota Department of Education offers an Alternative Certification program! Individuals will take 15-credits plus praxis exams while they perform their duties as a contract teacher for a South Dakota school district. Alternative Certification is available for most positions 5th grade through high school. Candidates must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree, unless pursuing a CTE Instructor position.

YOUTH SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION TRAINING
South Dakota Codified Law 13-42-71 requires certified educators to complete at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years. Compliance is verified through district accreditation reviews. You will be required to provide your most recent certificate of completion prior to starting employment with the Sioux Falls School District.

Please carefully review the options before selecting a training as unapproved trainings will require you to retake an approved course.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
- Serves as a contact person for the High School and the Office of Indian Education relative to student referrals for attendance, school enrollment, tardiness, cultural programming, and tutorial assistance.
- Develops and teaches a Native American studies curriculum embedded with Océti Šakówi? Essential Understandings, which reflects organizational skills, listening skills, writing, oral communication and Native American culture and tradition.
- Excellent fluency in speaking, writing, and reading Lakota language and the ability to recognize the Dakota and Nakota dialects.
- Provides tutorial assistance to Native American students in a variety of subject areas.
- Updates the High School Attendance Office and Office of Indian Education with information regarding student tardiness, absences and drops.
- Organizes and implements Native American cultural programs and or field trips as needed for students and families.
- Attends staff meetings, attendance meetings, Problem Solving meetings and other meetings as assigned by the principal.
- Attends regular meetings of the Indian Education Supervisor and occasional Title VI Parent Committee meetings for a progress report.
- Advocates for Native American students attending assigned school.
- Completes all case management, mileage, and written reports associated with the position of O.S.O. teacher.
- Performs other duties that may be assigned by the administration.

Starting at $52,233 to $58,823 per year, based on experience
