Description:

• Provides support to engineers by preparing routine layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, sketches and diagrams. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools, such as CAD, CAM, CATIA, ProEngineer, Solidworx or Siemens NX. Makes copies of drawings and maintains information regarding changes to database. Uses computer assisted design/drafting equipment and software to develop designs. Creates and revises production drawings (detail and assembly drawings). Makes final sketch of proposed drawing, checking dimension of parts, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project. Draws finished designs from sketches. Updates Drafting and Engineering Standards. Sets up and maintains an organized file system for production drawings. Revises and updates existing drawings reflecting design changes. Reviews blueprints, plans, specifications and other documentation. Maintains notes, design calculations and other documentation (like drawings, bill of materials, list of design parameters, and performance guarantees) for future reference.

Background/Need

• The Group seeks an experienced Senior optical/Mechanical Designer in the design, fabrication, integration and test of advanced sensor systems. The expert Designer will work in small teams on a variety of short duration (6-18 month) projects, interfacing with other subject matter experts across the Laboratory and provide complex and innovative solutions for rapid prototypes. This position must be able to create, design, oversee and coordinate the development of sensor/system components including electronics, thermal, mechanical, and optical systems.

Responsibilities:

• Develop complex designs for the optimum performance and ease of fabrication, assembly and testing of complex imaging systems, thermal systems packaging solutions, novel materials and innovative mechanisms
• Experience with a wide range of platforms (i.e. manned/unmanned vehicles, aircrafts, ships, space crafts)
• Experience with the design and modeling of mechanical enclosures, optical assemblies with an understanding of requirements needed for Mounting/adjustment/actuation, alignment &measurement techniques, precision bearing, gearing &drive systems, structural/thermal analysis and environmental testing.
• Must be able to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Should demonstrate good written and oral communications skills.

Required Skills:

• 5-8 years' experience in Mechanical Design Mechanical CAD experience (Solid Works or other CAD software) Vast experience with mechanisms and complex mechanical assemblies. Looking for a minimum of 5 years of experience, but ideally someone would have 8 years of experience.
• Experience with design, analysis and documentation of opto-/mechanical subsystems and components
• Familiarity with various fabrication techniques like machining, sheet metal, etc
• Familiarity with thermal analysis and structural analysis
• Familiarity with Optical systems and the design of EO/IR systems

Preferred Skills:

• Opto-mechanical experience is highly preferred. Candidates with this experience will stand out.
• Experience with various fabrication techniques like machining, sheet metal, etc
• Experience with military standards, mil spec components
• Experience with thermal analysis and structural analysis
• Experience with Optical systems and the design of EO/IR systems
• Experience with coordinating and executing system performance testing

Others:

• This person has some flexibility to work remote depending on the specific project work but will be required in the office at least 3-4 days a week. If this person was not originally local to MA, they would need to relocate for the start of this position.
• An interim is sufficient for the start of this position.
