Director of Emergency Management and Campus Safety Position Description

Shady Side Academy (SSA) seeks an experienced and thoughtful Director of Emergency Management and Campus Safety (DEM) with a background working at a governmental emergency management, public safety organization, and/or school campus safety department. SSA offers a unique and valuable education that is relational and robust, cultivates a balanced and informed worldview, and leverages real-world learning experiences to create leaders at the nexus of technology and the liberal arts. Accordingly, this role will be responsible for developing safety and security measures, coordinating training programs and assuring the overall safety and security of the four campuses of Shady Side Academy.

Reporting to the Director of Operations and working closely with the Director of Facilities and the Executive Leadership Team, the Director of Emergency Management and Campus Safety manages all campus safety and security operations to provide a safe environment for Shady Side Academy students, faculty, staff, visitors, and property. A successful candidate for this role will perform these duties in conjunction with school policies and procedures, and through coordination with the local authorities representing police and emergency services with jurisdiction in our campus locations.

Essential Functions and Key Objectives

  • Lead and mentor (24/7) campus safety and security staff, including hiring, orientation, work assignment, scheduling, discipline, and evaluation.
  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain comprehensive safety policies and standards for SSA
  • Lead the development/maintenance of a campus-wide crisis/emergency response plan
  • Train and assist employees and students in matters of security and safety, including but not limited to, employee training and deployment; special events planning and management; incident response, reporting, and follow-up; prepare and post written assignments and officer safety bulletins.
  • Serve as the Chair of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) (safety committee); participate in planning and training sessions, and in ERT emergency management operations; collaborate with administration, faculty, staff, students, and subcontracted personnel, and local police and fire emergency services in coordinating academy-wide safety training and drills.
  • Serve as Lead, Safety, and Security on the Enterprise Risk Management Team to assist in the identification and management of potential campus safety and security risks.
  • Oversee and plan annual Run.Hide.Fight (e.g., active shooter training for employees/students)
  • Collaborate with the Director of Facilities to ensure coordination of safety and facilities management functions.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Technology to ensure coordination of safety and technology management functions.
  • Maintain 24/7 on-call status to assist, as necessary, in the management of on-campus incidents and/or incidents in the vicinity of campus.
  • Act as school liaison to and coordinate with local police department operations in the campus vicinity; obtain and analyze local police campus vicinity crime data to assist in the efficient and effective deployment of campus vicinity police details.
  • As needed, act as liaison to other local authorities (i.e., Fire, Traffic Engineers, etc.).
  • Attend and represent the interests of SSA at periodic campus neighborhood watch meetings.
  • Periodically meet with school senior administration to report on safety operations and coordinate with other school functions.
  • Coordinate with other area independent school safety committees to maintain consistent approaches and identify any safety and security risks potentially facing area schools.
  • Manage the school emergency communication app (Raptor Alert) and provide training for faculty and staff.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications


Education and Required Experience

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • A minimum of (7) years relevant experience in progressively responsible positions within a governmental emergency management or public safety organization and/or school campus safety department.
  • Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
  • Certifications such as, but not limited to, Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), Associate Emergency Management (AEM), and Certified Business Continuity Professional are a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to diplomatically and effectively communicate with others during sensitive and stressful situations.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to multi-task in stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to be on-call (24/7).
  • Valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record.
  • Frequent outdoor activities in all possible weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
