Pay Information: SHPL typically hires new staff in at the entry rate of the posted pay scale. Exceptions may be made for successful applicants who have significant (5 years) direct experience in the position at a level beyond what is expected of a new hire.
Are you a passionate youth advocate with empathic listening skills? Do you like building relationships with children, teens and families? We may have the position for you. Shaker Heights Public Library is seeking a HT Youth Services Associate to help us meet our mission of strengthening our diverse community and transforming lives by providing reference, readers’ advisory and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and the adults who care for them. Must have excellent problem-solving skills, be able to switch between multiple tasks, and enjoy working collaboratively on a daily basis, this means interacting with children and teens locate and use library materials; choose items to meet their interests; find and evaluate information; use electronic resources including databases, e-media, and computers. Must enjoy working with and helping youth of all ages and backgrounds in a diverse community.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- A minimum of two years of college, with a bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
- General knowledge of youth programming, early literacy milestones, popular culture, and basic homework help strategies Customer service experience
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Research skills, including the ability to evaluate information sources for accuracy, reliability, and currency
- Ability to demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office and the internet. Ability to quickly learn new technologies and assist our customers with them
This is a half-time position that works 20 hours per week. The position also offers pro-rated paid time off including ETO (vacation, personal days and floating holidays), sick time and holidays. Must work some days, evenings, and weekends based on operational need.
