Building Maintenance Department
The Building Maintenance Department supports the mission of Shaker Village by providing the thoughtful stewardship of the Village’s buildings and the systems that support them so they may be enjoyed by guests today and passed on to future generations.
Position Summary
Reporting to and partnering with the Maintenance Foreman, the Maintenance Technician performs scheduled maintenance tasks and completes work order requests on the buildings, property, equipment and mechanical infrastructure of SVPH.
Responsibilities
Provides general maintenance and care of buildings and grounds that may include electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fixtures, HVAC, tile, masonry, light carpentry and finishing work.
Thoughtfully maintains a safe work environment and a visually appealing aesthetic for all work, both in process and when completed.
Contributes to the health and safety of Village guests and staff through attentiveness to safety concerns and the immediate reporting of and response to safety needs.
Assesses all maintenance needs with a critical eye, implementing repairs that solve problems at the source, preventing the need for repeat repairs and persistent issues.
Utilizes established facility maintenance software and communication processes to catalog and share facility needs, ongoing work, and completed work according to organizational policies.
Responds promptly and effectively to work orders and maintenance requests, prioritizing responses in collaboration with the Maintenance Foreman, to ensure a safe environment, high guest satisfaction, and a positive workspace for all members of the staff team.
Upholds high standards for the care of a National Historic Landmark, following best practices drawn from nationally recognized resources and specified by the Maintenance Foreman.
Partners with the Maintenance Forman and additional team members to manage the sewage treatment facilities at SVPH through daily care and regularly scheduled maintenance.
Attends to alarm systems throughout SVPH, activating, deactivating, and responding to alarm needs while on duty.
Contributes to the overall sustainability of the organization by the effective use of assets, both fiscal and physical, to ensure both longevity and efficiency.
Operates, cleans and maintains all equipment, tools and vehicles used to fulfill maintenance responsibilities.
Ensures that all work is conducted according to appropriate safety guidelines and utilizing appropriate personal protection equipment.
Is familiar with SVPH crisis management/emergency procedures and serves as a responder to their level of training as required.
Is familiar with and follows all key control and security procedures.
Provides vital input in planning scheduled maintenance calendar.
Assists with the appropriate storage and disposal of supplies, chemicals and other items as needed, with specific regard for environmental impact.
In collaboration with the Maintenance Foreman, maintains an ongoing partnership with the Development Office to effectively and regularly report all applicable work for the annual tax credit application and share stories of impact to potential donors.
Appropriately represents the organization, its Board and the President/CEO to guests, volunteers and donors.
Interacts with all Village staff and guests in a positive, helpful way, establishing a supportive culture that promotes high-quality experiences at SVPH.
Updates job knowledge for him/herself by remaining aware of new standards and regulations; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Accomplishes facilities and organization mission by completing additional tasks as assigned and related results as needed.

Education and Experience
A skilled worker, with at least 5 years of experience working in positions responsible for carpentry, HVAC, electrical and/or plumbing.
Preferred experience using computer software for data entry and/or work logs.
Preferred certifications include those in: HVAC, electrical, water treatment and plumbing.
Previous experience working in historic preservation or in historic properties preferred.
Previous experience working on mechanical lifts and/or elevators preferred.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Position will require use of a company vehicle while conducting certain Shaker Village business.
High School Diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
