JOB SUMMARY :
The Lead Estimator is responsible for managing the Estimators to develop timely and accurate project cost estimates for projects. The job of the Lead Estimator is to provide estimating services for customers, Sales staff, and project management to secure work for the company. This includes timely and continuous communication with the Sales, Manufacturing, and Operations teams. The Lead Estimator will routinely work with executive management providing updates and ongoing analysis of estimating activities. The Lead Estimator will ensure the Estimators are accurately pricing project drawings, specifications, and job-specific requirements to develop an accurate estimate of the project costs. They will also serve in a leadership position for our company with our customers during the preconstruction process. The Lead Estimator will utilize a variety of computer software applications to develop the bid and subsequent proposal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Responsible for the development of strategic bids that provide a detailed analysis of costs, alternative materials, potential risks, and recommendations. This includes presentation of data to the Executive and Leadership teams.
- Review estimates provided by estimating team for accuracy
- Provide project cost estimates using industry practices and experiences
- Identify, record, and convey project-related scope of work and specifications
- Documentation of errors, omissions, and ambiguities found in bid documents
- Partner with the Sales, Operations, and Manufacturing teams to ensure continuity of the project and that timelines are met
- Participate in scope review meetings with customers to demonstrate the company’s knowledge of the project and expertise in the metals industry
- Sourcing and qualifying project-related vendors and suppliers
- Incorporating strategies and pricing directives of Director of Preconstruction
- Confirmation and justification of all costs applied to an estimate
- Responsible for the development Estimating Department. This includes functioning as a resource, and guide through peer mentorship.
- Identify ways to improve contract gross margin during the bidding process
- Summarize and review the final estimates with the Director of Preconstruction and President. Highlight risks and opportunities for profit improvement.
- Work with the Sales staff by assisting them with filtering leads.
- Participate in developing strategies to win projects.
- Assigns responsibilities for estimating team on each project.
- Review project proposals prior to submission for correct written inclusions, exclusions, and qualifications.
- Develop and maintain a quality control program for the Estimating Department and its work product.
- Identify risk issues and their order of magnitude.
- Prepares conceptual budgets based on minimal information.
- Provide technical support for sales presentations. This may include but is not limited to detailed material specifications, proper means and methods of manufacturing, and installation techniques.
- Maintains and communicates data on material cost trends affecting project costs.
- Analyze alternate means and methods to determine the most economic alternative.
- Look to continuously improve processes for more efficient output and bidding.
- Actively participates in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company image.
- Performs other related duties as needed.
- Tracks hit rate for individual estimators and salespeople and uses this info to make changes to achieve improved results.
