Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Preschool Director to lead our early childhood education program. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of education administration. As the Preschool Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the preschool, ensuring compliance with educational standards, and promoting a positive learning atmosphere.
POSITION: Director of Shandon Weekday School
ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports directly to the Board.
ANNUAL LEAVE: The Director will receive three weeks of annual vacation leave, three
weeks of annual sick leave, and two weeks of continuing education, to include DSS training
hours.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in field. Minimum of 5 years
experience in early childhood education with minimum of 3 years in administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of SWS
and is ultimately accountable for the fulfillment of those duties. In addition, the Director is
expected to fulfill all of the following responsibilities and other duties that may be assigned.
I. ADMINISTRATIVE
A. Standards and Policy
1. Meet regulatory/licensing requirements and implement established program
standards.
2. Implement the program's purpose, philosophy, guidelines and policies as
outlined in the Parent Handbook.
3. Have working knowledge and complete procedures for meeting the
requirements for child care centers as established by the SC Department of Social
Services, the Richland County Health Department and the Columbia Fire
Department.
4. Maintain NAEYC staff-to-child ratios (Note: as of July 31, 2010 Agnes
Norfleet, after thorough discussion and board consideration, allowed for the
cessation in accreditation through NAEYC. SWS will, however, maintain the high
standards set forth by NAEYC except those requiring dismissal of long-time, dedicated teachers.)
5. Develop long-range goals and objectives.
6. Develop and maintain a system for maintaining records for students.
7. Develop and maintain a professional library (virtual or physical) for use by the staff.
8. Work with the Board to develop an annual operating budget designed to provide and maintain adequate facilities, equipment and personnel resources to achieve the desired educational objectives.
9. Ensure a system for budget expenditures for supplies and services.
10. Identify needs not covered by the budget and bring them to the attention of the Board for funding.
11. Work with the kitchen staff to ensure menus that confirm to accepted nutritional standards, following CACFP guidelines
12. Maintain an inviting physical environment that fosters optimal growth and development.
13. Maintain indoor and outdoor playground areas.
14. Coordinate with the Church Administrator regarding custodial care, maintenance and repairs.
15. Coordinate use of shared spaces with the Church Administrator.
16. Inform parents regularly about the program through monthly newsletters, e mail, notes and an annual calendar, etc.
17. Meet regularly with the Board.
18. Maintain the SWS website.
B. Staff and Personnel
1. The Director position will require a full-time work week.
2. Hire and supervise the teaching and kitchen staff.
3. Know, implement and enforce SWS policies and propose policy updates to the Board as needed.
4. Maintain position descriptions and evaluation criteria of the staff.
5. Evaluate staff members' performance and make annual compensation recommendations.
6. Determine the job schedule and time for each staff member.
7. Conduct staff meetings on a timely basis.
8. Provide for in-service (Continuing Education) training for staff and inform staff of and encourage their participation in training opportunities in early childhood education.
9. Ensure that an updated substitute list is maintained and accessible to all staff members.
10. Maintain records and files relevant to employment of personnel.
II. SCHOOL OPERATION AND DUTIES
A. Early Childhood Curriculum
1. Provide leadership and supervision of interactions, activities, and materials appropriate for young children's emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, and physical development.
2. Oversee the development and implementation of the curriculum and discipline guidelines.
3. Establish age groupings, size of groups and space utilization and assign children to groups in a manner that is cost effective, yet maintains the highest quality preschool education and childcare and is in compliance with NAEYC standards.
4. Plan for staffing needs in compliance with DSS standards and NAEYC ratios.
5. Foster positive, supportive, individualized interactions between staff and children and between children.
6. Monitor staff preparations of daily schedules, weekly lesson plans, unit themes and special events.
7. Ensure teachers of infants and toddlers maintain daily logs.
8. Ensure children's progress is assessed annually with parent(s) or guardians through parent/teacher conferences and by ensuring completion of yearly screening as directed by special needs policy.
9. Oversee provisions of age-appropriate learning materials, equipment and supplies.
10. Maintain and update resources related to the curriculum.
11. Communicate the objectives and methods of the program to the parents, and the community at large.
B. Enrollment
1. Recruit and enroll children in the various programs.
2. Facilitate fair admissions and enrollment policies.
3. Develop and implement annual registration and enrollment plans.
4. Maintain and make recommendations about enrollment policies and procedures.
5. Make enrollment projections as needed.
6. Maintain an updated waiting list in accordance with priorities listed in the Parent Handbook and Waiting List Policies.
7. See that parents are informed of admission and that required forms are completed for admission by the support staff.
C. Health and Safety
1. Protect and enhance the health and safety of the children and staff in compliance with DSS, DHEC and Fire Marshal policies.
2. Create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
3. Report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to Richland County DSS and/or law enforcement agencies in the manner required by law.
4. Arrange for first aid and CPR training for staff.
5. Plan for emergency evacuations and conduct practice drills.
6. Maintain the building, grounds, and equipment in safe, clean condition in cooperation with the Church Administrator.
7. Oversee health and immunization records for the children and staff.
8. Maintain in an easily accessible place, emergency numbers and names of persons to contact in the event of an emergency involving a child or staff member.
9. Drive the bus for field trips and after school pick up.
