Position Summary:
During the summer, this person must be able to perform the day to day mowing operations and turf maintenance that is associated with someone who works in the grounds department. In the winter, this individual must be able to perform duties of snow shoveling, ice removal, and in some cases …snowplowing duties. He/she must be able to operate all grounds equipment and resort vehicles in a safe manner.
Position Duties/Responsibilities (Summer):
- Daily mowing or conditioning of the grounds and other related areas connected to the success of the resort.
- Operate grounds equipment in an efficient manner. (I.e. weed eaters, mowers, blowers and utility vehicles)
- Inform the mechanic of any and all changes in operating and performance of their equipment.
- Perform daily basic maintenance on the equipment, which includes the checking of ALL fluid levels. (I.e. oils, greases, hydraulic fluids, leaking hoses, etc).
- Work closely with and assist the Grounds Manager in their day-to-day observations of the grounds in general.
- Work independently of supervision.
- Must be able to perform any other duties deemed necessary by the grounds manager.
- Must be prepared and able to work in all weather conditions.
- Be punctual/ dependable and be willing to adapt to a schedule that revolves around occupancy levels and weather events.
- Must be able to work in a courteous and respectful manner with all SCR associates.
- Must have an eye for detail and be willing to “do whatever it takes” to get the job done
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Duties/Responsibilities (Winter):
- All the above with the inclusion of the following duties listed below specific to winter.
- Daily snow and ice removal in designated areas (shoveling and plowing).
- Operate all winter grounds equipment (I.e. snow blowers, loader, tractors etc.)
- Be able to recognize unsafe traversing conditions and be able to anticipate and react to potential hazards to our guests and employees alike.
- Be able to complete a daily plow/ salt log a directed by the Grounds Manager.
- Be able to work overtime or nighttime shifts as designated by the Grounds Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Guest Service/Conduct:
Personal and professional accountability is an important aspect of employment with Shanty Creek Resorts. To that end, all Shanty Creek employees are required to adhere to Resort policies and standards of conduct while providing our guests with the highest level of service possible. No matter their position, all members of our staff may have opportunities to interact with our guests on a daily basis, therefore all employees must:
- Meet, on a daily basis, the personal appearance and uniform standards as identified by the Shanty Creek Resorts Employee Handbook.
- Utilize all tools provided to ensure that prompt and correct service and information is being given to our guests.
- Conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, maintaining the highest standards of guest service in their interactions with fellow employees, vendors, and most importantly our guests.
- This position requires frequent, daily contact with guests. Individuals in this position must be able to direct guests to all resort amenities and be able to refer guests to resort events and activities.
Professional Experience:
A minimum zero to 6 months professional experience in grounds maintenance is required for this position.
Education:
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred for this position.
Required Skills:
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to use a variety of hand tools from trowels to shovels.
- Must be able to shovel, plant, mow, dig, calculate numbers and rake as necessary.
- Must be able to interact with the mechanics, relaying any and all changes in the general performance of the equipment being operated.
- Must perform after training on a daily basis, the normal general maintenance on any piece of equipment operated, which includes checking ALL fluid levels (i.e., oil, grease, hydraulic fluid, etc.)
- Work closely with and assist all managers in their day-to-day observations of the property in general.
Working Conditions:

- Work is performed entirely outdoors with exposure to all elements: i.e., insects, snakes, poison ivy, extreme cold and hot temperatures, snow and rain.
- Must be able to lift/carry 50 to 100 lbs. Necessary for loading and/or removal of debris, tools, tires, hooking up equipment, etc. May vary each day with work load and required tasks.
- Work is performed 7 days/week with varying shifts.
- Much of the work is performed using ladders.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles
