Seasonal Trail Crew Positions – Pocahontas County, WV
The Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau (PCCVB), in partnership with the Snowshoe Highlands Area Recreation Collaborative (SHARC) and the United States Forest Service, Monongahela National Forest, is seeking motivated, hardworking outdoor enthusiasts for seasonal trail crew positions.
SHARC is dedicated to trail maintenance and development within the Snowshoe Highlands Area Ride Center, an IMBA-designated mountain bike ride center. The trail crew will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the trail system, contributing to SHARC’s goal of advancing from IMBA Silver Level to Gold Level Ride Center Status. With an active 2025 trail work season ahead, two Trail Maintenance Crew Technician positions are available.
Position Details
- Job Title: Trail Maintenance Crew Technician
- Season Duration: April – October 2025
- Location: Monongahela National Forest, Pocahontas County, WV (Marlinton & Snowshoe)
- Salary Range: $14–$15/hour, DOE

Job Overview
SHARC collaborates with local stakeholders to implement sustainable trail maintenance and construction while ensuring environmental stewardship. Crew members will be required to carry tools and daily provisions to worksites located 5 miles into backcountry terrain. Work will take place in varied weather conditions and on rugged terrain, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols. Training will be provided; however, applicants with 2 years of relevant experience are highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform trail maintenance and construction, including:
- Water mitigation
- Dry-stone masonry
- Tread reconstruction and rerouting
- Weed-eating, leaf blowing, and foliage pruning on singletrack trails
- Work efficiently with hand tools and power tools
- Hike 5 miles carrying up to 50 lbs. of tools, food, and water
- Follow safety protocols and standard operating procedures
- Communicate effectively with crew members and leadership
- Appear on time and prepared for physically demanding workdays
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of relevant trail work or outdoor labor experience
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Mountain biking experience (recommended)
Minimum Requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- High school diploma/GED
- Proficiency with smartphone technology, digital cameras, and GPS devices
- Backcountry hiking, camping, or wilderness experience
- Ability to troubleshoot minor field technology issues
- Strong interest in conservation and trail building
Schedule & Work Environment
- 4-day workweeks, 10-hour shifts (subject to weather and event-based adjustments)
- Physically demanding outdoor work in a remote setting
- Adherence to proper work attire:
- 8-inch lace-up boots
- Ankle-high socks
- Long pants
- Layered clothing for variable weather
- Dependable rain gear
Housing Requirement
Applicants must secure housing in Pocahontas County, WV before their start date. Assistance may be available for highly motivated candidates.
