ABOUT THE POSITION
Nutrition Assistant I
Under close supervision, learn to provide nutrition assessment, evaluation and counseling plus related duties for low-risk participants in the Women, Infants and Children program within the Public Health Branch of the Health and Human Services Department (HHSA).
Nutrition Assistant II
Under supervision, perform nutrition assessment, evaluation and counseling plus related duties for low risk participants in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program within the Public Health Branch of the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Health and Human Services Agency - Women, Infants and Children Program is seeking Nutrition Assistants to fill current, and future, Full time vacancies. The ideal candidate will serve English speaking clients, and may serve Spanish speaking clients, in our regional clinics and will have experience working with a diverse population.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Nutrition Assistant I
This is the entry level classification in the series and incumbents are expected to progress to the journey level of Nutrition Assistant II upon successful completion of the required duties. The Nutrition Assistant II typically requires one-year experience performing nutrition assessment and counseling AND is a certified WIC Nutrition Assistant OR possesses a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics, or health science / education.
Nutrition Assistant II
This is the journey-level classification in the series and incumbents are expected to be able to perform a full range of nutrition assessment and counseling duties.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Provide nutrition education and documentation for low nutritional risk participants and issue benefits to eligible participants. Work towards completing State WIC "WNA" Certification. Screens new WIC applicants for program eligibility and schedules appointments; sends out missed notices to WIC participants missing one month of vouchers; completes disqualification documents for WIC participants as needed; assists with completion of WIC enrollment and certification forms or other forms necessary for participant service delivery; assists with implementing policies and procedures, makes necessary referrals to community resources; weighs and measures women, infants, or children; answers telephone, receives visitors, types, files, and completes general office functions; records participant information in a computerized system, facilitates group educational sessions, participates in WIC Unit Work Teams, maintains participant confidentiality plus other duties as directed by Clinic Services Coordinators, PH Nutritionists and / or the Program Manager.
Nutrition Assistant II
Provide nutrition education and documentation for low nutritional risk participants and issues vouchers to eligible participants. Screens new WIC applicants for program eligibility and schedules appointments; maintains voucher pick up signature log; sends out missed notices to WIC participants missing one month of vouchers; completes disqualification documents for WIC participants as needed; assists with completion of WIC enrollment and certification forms or other forms necessary for participant service delivery; makes necessary referrals to community resources; weighs and measures women, infants, or children; answers telephone, receives visitors, types, files, and completes general office functions. Records participant information in a computerized system, and maintains participant confidentiality. The Nutrition Assistant II also assists with interpretation and implementation of policy and procedures; participates in community outreach activities, has input into program planning and development; assists in the revision of nutrition education materials and presentations, assists in breastfeeding education and support for participants; facilitates group educational sessions, participates in WIC Unit Work Teams and HHSA Public Health committees and projects, plus other duties as directed by Clinic Services Coordinators, PH Nutritionists and / or Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Nutrition Assistant I
Knowledge of : Basic principles of good nutrition and nutritional needs for various stages of the life cycle; basic nutrition terminology routinely used in reports and evaluations; basic child development principles; and clerical practices and procedures.
Ability to : Communicate nutrition information effectively to groups and individuals in oral and written formats; maintain and record information accurately into a computerized system; establish effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and act as a team player; interact with participants in a customer-friendly and culturally appropriate manner; demonstrate effective communications skills; and actively promote the HHSA's mission.
These employment standards are typically attained by : Completion of at least 12 semester units of college level course work in nutrition, health science / education, child development or a closely related field. Previous work experience in a community nutrition program may be substituted for all or part of the education requirements.
Nutrition Assistant II
Knowledge of : Basic principles of good nutrition and nutritional needs for various stages of the life cycle; basic nutrition terminology routinely used in reports and evaluations; basic child development principles; and clerical practices and procedures.
Ability to : Communicate nutrition information effectively to groups and individuals in oral and written formats; maintain and record information accurately into a computerized system; establish effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and act as a team player; interact with participants in a customer-friendly and culturally appropriate manner; demonstrate effective communications skills; and actively promote the HHSA's mission.
These employment standards are typically attained by : Successful completion of one year experience performing nutrition assessment and counseling AND certification as a WIC Nutrition Assistant; OR possesses a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics, or health science / education.

- Possession of a valid California driver's license.
