ABOUT THE POSITION

Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Benefits are not included.

This position will be 40 hours per week up to 900 hours in a fiscal year on a schedule of (4) 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday from 6 : 00AM to 4 : 30PM, with Fridays OFF.

This recruitment is for two separate locations : Redding, CA. and Fall River Mills, CA. You can indicate your preference for one location or both in the supplemental questions portion of the application.

Under supervision, to perform a variety of semi-skilled, unskilled, and manual tasks in the maintenance of County roads, traffic control signs and pavement markings, tree trimming, and related areas and structures; to operate trucks and other maintenance equipment; and to perform related work as required.

Public Works provides all Personal Protective Equipment and work shirts.

This is an excellent opportunity to work into permanent placement with the Public Works department.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have at least one year experience in road construction work including patching broken or eroded pavement, and repairing guard rails, highway markers and fences. A prior working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions including traffic control is essential to this position. A flagging certification is highly desired. Must be competent in operating various heavy machinery and equipment, including trucks, snowplows, and specialized road maintenance vehicles common to the road construction and maintenance field. This position will mainly be responsible for driving duties and will require possession of a Class A or B commercial license at the time of hire.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level class for the Road Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents of positions in this class normally perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance tasks in road maintenance or traffic control and operate the smaller and simpler trucks and snow removal equipment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Clears brush and undergrowth and cleans culverts and ditches; operates chain saw to cut and remove fallen trees and other debris from roadways; assists in resurfacing, oiling and patching roads; loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, pipe and other maintenance materials; operates and may perform minor field maintenance, repair and adjustment to trucks and snow removal equipment of less than three axles; assembles, repairs and installs traffic control signs; may act as a flag person; may be required to operate heavier pieces of equipment normally associated with higher levels in the class series on a temporary, emergency or relief basis for training purposes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following :

Knowledge of : Basic methods, materials, safety practices, and tools used in road maintenance and road traffic control; operation and preventive maintenance of trucks.

Ability to : Understand oral and written instructions; perform a variety of manual tasks and operate road maintenance and traffic control equipment; demonstrate strength, agility, and endurance; keep simple records; work cooperatively with others.

Minimum Qualifications :

One (1) year of work experience preferably involving construction work and / or the operation of trucks and equipment common to the construction and maintenance field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Class A California driver’s license or the ability to obtain a Class A driver’s license within six (6) months of hire.

The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions and vibration. The employee routinely works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
