ABOUT THE POSITION
Staff Nurse I : Under general supervision, to perform professional nursing services for patients in the health programs of the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and to perform related work as required.
Staff Nurse II : Same as Staff Nurse I, under direction, additionally to instruct and supervise other assigned medical personnel.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Staff Nurse I : This is the entry level for Registered Nurses who have recently graduated from a basic nursing program, or for those Registered Nurses who do not have recent nursing experience. Incumbents in this class typically remain Staff Nurse I for six months. Assignments are in the health programs within the various branches of the HHSA. Typically, assignments in the Public Health Branch would not require the training and experience of a Public Health Nurse.
Staff Nurse II : This is the journey-level class for Registered Nurses who have recent professional nursing experience. Assignments are in the health programs within the various branches of the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). Typically, assignments in the Public Health Branch would not require the training or experience of a Public Health Nurse.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Staff Nurse I / II : Assists in and personally administers general nursing care to assess patients at the Mental Health Clinic or in the field (e.g., hospital emergency rooms, local shelters, board and care facilities, homes, etc.) to determine if they are a danger to themselves and others or gravely disabled; assess for signs of adverse effects of medications and for compliance with medication instructions; work closely with community agencies (e.g., Crisis Centers, hospital emergency room staff, law enforcement, and psychiatric hospitals); make preliminary observations of patients' conditions and prepare them for medical treatment; assist physicians in treatment and examinations and may record instructions as emergency orders; provide for carrying out prescribed tests and treatments, and personally handles the less difficult cases or treatments; observe patient for symptoms, progress, and results of medical and nursing treatments; report unusual occurrences and conditions of patients to supervisors; administer special medications; instruct patients or their relatives concerning home care; render first aid; keep charts and records; and periodically attend in-service meetings.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following :
Staff Nurse I :
Knowledge of : Current nursing principles, methods, and procedures; medical terminology, hospital routines, and equipment.
Ability to : Administer treatments, medicines, and narcotics; maintain a sympathetic understanding of the patients under care and supervision; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
These employment standards are typically attained with Graduation from an accredited program with an associate degree in nursing, bachelor’s degree in nursing, or another equivalent program.
Staff Nurse II : Knowledge of :
Knowledge of : Current nursing principles, methods, and procedures; medical terminology, hospital routines, and equipment; hospital policies and procedures.
Ability to : Administer treatments, medicines, and narcotics; keep records and prepare clear and concise reports; maintain a sympathetic understanding of the patients under care and supervision; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work; supervise and train other nursing personnel.
These standards are typically attained with a minimum of six months of experience performing the duties of a Registered Nurse.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Staff Nurse I :
- Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse (RN) issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing and Nurse Registration or possession of RN license within 120 days of the date of employment;
- Possession of a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing and possession of RN license within 120 days of the date of employment.
- Possession of an Interim Nursing Permit.
Staff Nurse II : Knowledge of :
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Staff Nurse I / II position will fill the vacancy at the Public Health Branch’s Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and Communicable Diseases (CD) Unit. An ideal candidate for the Staff Nurse position will possess a strong foundation in nursing principles and a passion for improving health outcomes. Experience with Sexually Transmitted Infections and other Communicable Diseases is desirable but not required. Recent Registered Nurse graduates are encouraged to apply. Training and guidance will be provided to well-qualified candidates who are committed to continuous learning and have a positive, team-oriented attitude. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills, including establishing rapport with diverse populations and delivering sensitive information with empathy and compassion. They will be adaptable and comfortable working in dynamic environments, often facing ambiguity and uncertainty. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess excellent organizational and time management skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant computer applications.
