What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Shaver Road Animal Hospital?
Shaver Road Animal Hospital is a privately owned small animal hospital looking for a Veterinary Assistant to add to our growing team! Average between 30-38 hours weekly. All assistants are expected to share weekend and holiday kennel shifts after 90 days. Hours will vary from 7a-7:30p. Starts at $12.50/hr with the opportunity to climb at your pace through our assistant level pay scale. Vacation, sick days, discounted pet care, and health insurance available after 90 days. Annual allowance for scrub purchases. Veterinary experience is not necessary.
We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant to care for our patients and support our veterinarians. You’ll play an important role in bringing comfort to our patients and ensuring the smooth running of our facility. We’ll rely on you to assist the veterinarian in examinations. You'll be answering phones and scheduling appointments. You’ll be keeping all areas of the hospital clean and sanitized.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Assist veterinarians and technicians as directed with patient care
- Provide compassionate care for hospitalized or boarding patients (feeding, administering medications, baths, etc.)
- Assist in cleaning the hospital (ex: laundry, floors, taking out the trash and recycling, cleaning treatment, surgery, and exam rooms, kennels and cages, bathrooms, kitchen).
- Collect samples, process in-house diagnostics and/or prepare samples for outside lab
- Observe animal behaviors or health conditions and report to the vet
- Help in cases of emergencies as directed
- Fill prescriptions as directed by the veterinarian
- Handle administrative duties such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, taking payments, triage health concern calls, taking a patient history when checking in animals for veterinarian
- Keep accurate and professional history and logs in patients’ medical records.
- Shared weekend and holiday kennel shifts
Skills
- No veterinary assistant experience necessary! We are willing to train the right candidate!
- Customer service experience preferred
- Excellent communication skills
- Patient and caring personality
- Have the ability to work well with the team, as well as independently
- Ability to follow instructions properly
- Comfortable being around cats and dogs
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g. lift up to 40 lbs)
- Flexibility to stay late when the occasional emergency arises
