Shawnee Mass Transit District is seeking a dedicated full-time Mechanic to join our maintenance team. Reporting to the Shop Manager, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of our fleet—including buses, vans, and specialized transit vehicles. What You’ll Do:- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain SMTD vehicles
- Perform preventative maintenance (oil changes, fluid checks, belt replacements, etc.)
- Troubleshoot and repair transmissions, motors, and other vehicle components
- Ensure vehicles are clean and stocked with emergency equipment (first aid kits, fire extinguishers)
- Use computerized maintenance systems to manage service history and schedules
- Follow shop safety protocols and promote a collaborative work environment
- Share expertise with other team members to support overall shop performance
- High school diploma or equivalent (technical training in automotive or diesel tech preferred)
- Experience working on large vehicles (buses, vans, etc.)
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with computerized diagnostic tools and maintenance systems
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to be on-call and work flexible hours as needed
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
– Shawnee MTD will provide the training to obtain a CDL if you do not currently have one - Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stoop, bend, and work in varied shop and outdoor conditions
