Job Description Summary

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Children's Learning Center (CLC) is a preschool and lab school for the Department of Teacher Education. The school serves children who are 6 weeks through 5 years of age. The CLC's curriculum is based on state and national standards, including the Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards. Teachers use developmentally appropriate practices as they offer a variety of learning experiences and environments to the children. Teachers are expected to provide overall leadership in the classrooms as they involve parents in their children's education, supervise pre-service teachers, collaborate with SSU faculty, and mentor students completing field experiences at the CLC. This is a full-time 9-month administrative employment position.

The search committee will review applications until the position is filled. The initial review of applicants will take place on 1 / 2 / 2025.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Offers a variety of learning experiences and environments to children

  • Creates an appropriate classroom environment for the children and develops and implements the CLC's curriculum. Uses developmentally appropriate practices as determined by NAEYC standards when engaging the children in learning experiences.
  • Develop and implement positive behavior strategies that will provide direction with discipline problems and guidance for intervention strategies when problems occur.
  • Assesses the developmental progress of each child across all developmental areas, using a variety of instruments and multiple data sources that address the program's curriculum areas. Uses assessment information to design goals for individual children as well as to guide curriculum planning and monitor progress. Maintains classroom portfolio, attendance, and child files.
  • Uses technology as an instructional tool to extend learning within the classroom, integrate and enrich the curriculum, as a mechanism to share information between staff and families, and as a professional resource with colleagues and for one's own professional development.
  • Provides a safe, clean, and stimulating environment in which children and their families are provided with care that is warm, responsive, attentive, supportive, and culturally sensitive according to individual needs.
  • 2. Involves parents in children's education

  • Maintains ongoing communication between staff and families using a variety of means, including the Daily Note Home, periodic parent-teacher conferences, parent-teacher orientation, informal meetings, and web communication to promote dialogue and inform families of children's learning activities and developmental milestones.
  • Creates and maintains documentation panels of student's work and progress to inform parents of classroom work. Invites parents and families into the classroom and supervises parent-led activities.
  • 3. Supervises and mentors students completing field experience and service

  • Provides supervision to and mentors teaching assistants as well as students placed at the CLC for service or field experiences from occupational therapy, nursing, fine arts, or education programs. Conducts teacher assistant semester evaluations to discuss the progress of professional growth and development. Completes semester evaluations on all students placed in the classrooms for the field.
  • 4. Collaborates with the community, SSU Faculty and Programs

  • Collaborates with SSU faculty to enhance programming.
  • Presents at the Fabulous Friday Early Childhood Conference.
  • Collaborates with colleagues, and represents classroom at staff meetings to share ideas, experiences, and concerns.
  • Complies with the National Association for the Education of Young Children Code of Ethical Conduct, licensure rules and regulations as set forth by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, and guidelines of the federal CACFP program.
  • 5. Other duties

  • Displays an on-going desire to learn. Attends and participates in on-going professional development. Assists in planning staff in-service, parent education trainings and family events. Attends center functions.

  • Minimum Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    MINIMUM JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Communication skills : must be able to talk with parents and colleagues about the progress of the children in their care; ability to provide information effectively and exercise good listening skills to understand parents' instructions.
  • Decision-making skills : exercise good judgment in order to respond to emergencies or difficult situations.
  • Instructional skills : ability to explain things in terms young children can understand.
  • Interpersonal skills : ability to work well with people to develop good relationships with parents, children, and colleagues.
  • Patience : ability to respond to overwhelming and difficult situations calmly.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

  • Associate Degree or CDA Credential
  • Experience working with young children, including work experience or clinical experience in university courses
  • CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse, and Communicable Disease training (within 90 days of hiring)
