Sheboygan County Head Start
Status: Full-Time/Part Year – Summer off.
Position would be in classroom and as bus monitor
Reports to: Early Childhood Education Manager
Responsibilities: Under the direction of the teacher, the assistant helps in developing and implementing a developmentally appropriate preschool program for children, which helps them to develop socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally.
Duties:
1. Review written Weekly Plan to assist in classroom activities.
2. Assists in observing and recording on-going observations of each child.
3. Communicate with children in an appropriate manner.
4. Assist and participate in field trips that are developmentally appropriate.
5. Assist in planning, organizing, and directing daily activities.
6. Assist in collecting and preparing materials as needed for learning activities.
7. Accompany the teacher on the initial home visit and end of the year home visit; unless an interpreter or family service staff person attends the visit.
8. Responsible for the health and safety of the children, on the bus, in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips.
9. Must check First Aid Kit in classroom and backpack monthly. Request needed supplies from
Health/Nutrition Manager.
10. Use positive guidance with children.
11. Follow all rules and regulations of the host site.
12. Comply with Wisconsin Statutes Children’s Code and Head Start Personnel Policies in suspected cases of child abuse or neglect.
13. Assist and encourage parents to participate in all aspects of the program as described in the
Head Start Performance Standards.
14. Welcome parents and volunteers, and help them effectively utilize their skill and ability in planning and carrying out classroom activities.
15. Participate in the monthly Family Activities when requested by the Family and Community
Coordinator.
16. Follow all Wisconsin Licensing Rules for Group Child Care Centers.
17. Follow emergency procedures according to Head Start policies. Assist in the practice of monthly fire/tornado drills.
18. Become an active member of the site team; perform any duties to make the site run efficiently and effectively.
19. Maintain confidentiality at all times, during work hours and in the community.
20. Attend appropriate in-house and other agency related meetings.
21. Attend Head Start provided in-services; take part in at least 25 hours of continuing education opportunities per year and record.
22. Assist in preparing the classroom and materials to begin the year and help with inventory and cleanup of the classroom at the end of the year.
23. Perform the duties of Bus Monitor for transporting the children to and from class. Must follow the job description for Bus Monitor when in this role.
24. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Associates Degree or current CDA in Early Childhood is preferred. Will consider those currently enrolled in an Early Childhood program that leads to degree.
2. Must have the skill and ability to function as a positive and involved team member.
3. Must have speaking and writing skills that enable effective communication.
4. Must be able to keep accurate records, and make all necessary documentation in a timely manner.
5. Requires regular kneeling, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to the needs of the children. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
6. Must be able to work well with adults, and children with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
7. Must pass pre-employment drug tests.
8. Must be in good health and obtain a physical examination as required.
9. Must have Mantoux tuberculin test upon hire.
10. Must have valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, including liability, and an automobile for occasional use on the job.
