THE ROLE
The Children's Librarian is responsible for oversight of all children's services functions with a focus on children in 6th grade and under and an emphasis on the provision of library services to youth in the Port Washington community that supports the W. J. Niederkorn Library mission set by the Library Board of Trustees.
- Coordinate activities with library staff and community members to create a youth-friendly, inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment throughout the library and community, celebrating the diversity of youth and their families in our community.
- Oversee the planning, implementation, and review of children's programs and activities; oversee collection development, selection, and weeding of children’s materials.
- Assist in the development of the departmental budget and oversee appropriate expenditure of funds; use acquisitions funds in the ILS system and catalog children’s and YA materials.
- Market youth programs / services to the community via library newsletter, website, social media, newspaper, and other means to create participation and promotion.
- Keep abreast of new trends in library services to youth and gauge what may be successful for our community. Compile a wish list of possibilities along with funding consequences.
- Maintain regular communication with school staff and daycare staff and visit schools and other facilities for children when practical, such as summer reading program promotion; create and maintain procedures for the Children's Services Department.
- Answer reference questions, assist customers with technology, and provide readers’ advisory guidance.
