Job Summary
This position serves as a heavy equipment operator on water line, water meter, and assorted field operations for the Shelby County Water Services Department. Work involves installation, maintenance and repair of water lines, meter and facilities; inspection of tank sites for maintenance and repair needs; inspection of rights-of-way to perform maintenance and clean-up, such as bush hogging, mowing and weed eating; location and marking of valves and main lines; assisting with maintenance of transmission lines, booster stations; ensures utility vehicles and equipment are serviced and maintained according to Shelby County standards. Perform other duties assigned.
- Serves as an equipment operator on projects pertinent to a water utility.
- Patrols transmission lines for leaks and notifies proper personnel.
- Inspects booster station sites for maintenance needs and notifies proper personnel.
- Inspects tank sites for maintenance needs and notifies proper personnel.
- Inspects rights-of-way and performs bush hogging, weed eating, mowing, etc.
- Locates and marks valves and mainlines.
- Makes sure all equipment is serviced and maintained.
- Performs chlorine level and bacteriological sampling and checks.
- Installs water meters and boxes as needed throughout the water system.
- Removes and replaces broken and inoperative water meters.
- Performs water meter readings.
- Handles water line problems and repairs leaking waterlines.
- Work beyond normal work shift or schedule
- Available for on call work after hours and on weekends as needed and as required by supervision and management.
- Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications and Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Five years' experience operating multiple types of equipment commonly used in the construction and maintenance of water mains and appurtenances in areas subject to vehicular and pedestrian traffic and in close proximity to other utilities at a skilled level. This includes but is not limited to bulldozer, tractor, backhoe, trackhoe, bush hog, mowers, etc.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
- Valid Class A CDL.
- Grade I Water Operator Certification by ADEM or higher certification.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is mostly performed outdoors. Subject to extreme weather conditions and noises.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is light in nature and consists of a substantial amount of walking, bending, carrying, lifting, and carrying.
