Job Summary
Work involves installation, maintenance and repair of water meters, lines and equipment. This position performs meter readings, customer service, facility maintenance, and operates water service and maintenance equipment. This position is proficient in the operation and routine maintenance of all heavy equipment, machines, trailers to meet Department needs. This position also helps with training new employees.
- Performs chlorine level and bacteriological sampling and checks.
- Performs pumping station checks.
- Installs water meters and boxes at new construction sites.
- Removes and replaces broken and inoperative water meters.
- Performs water meter readings.
- Handles water line problems and repairs leaking water lines.
- Locates water lines with an electronic line locator for utility companies.
- Organizes and maintains the parts inventory.
- Answers customer questions, resolves complaints and billing disputes.
- Completes work orders and tracks work with work order software.
- Shares an on-call shift for after hour customer support, emergency response.
- Conducts maintenance and groundskeeping at Water Department properties and facilities (treatment plants, master meters, tanks, booster stations, etc.).
- Proficient in the operation of the of all heavy equipment and machines including vacuum excavation equipment, boring equipment, fork lift, tractor and rotary cutter, mini excavator, front end loaders, rental equipment, and all other equipment as assigned.
- Drives and pulls trailers to insure necessary equipment are onsite to make repairs and meet project needs.
- Operates hydraulic tapping tool for large taps (4" -12")
- Makes sure all equipment is serviced and maintained.
- Assists with the training of new employees to learn job responsibilities and the Shelby County Water System
- Assists with inspecting construction of water infrastructure at times of high demand or in the absence of a Water Services Inspector.
- Capable of operating GPS equipment for mapping of water appurtenances.
- Assists with field investigations associated with the Cross Connection Prevention Plan.
- Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is medium to heavy in nature and consists of driving a vehicle and equipment, walking on uneven terrain, standing for periods of 3- 6 hours when working on a main leak, bending, pushing and pulling wrenches at various angles, lifting up to 150 lbs., twisting while using tools (including a weed eater), shoveling and digging, wading in water and mud that can be up to knee deep, carrying objects that weight 20-50 or more pounds and climbing into and out of meter pits to open and close the meter lid.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed out of doors and is subject to extremes in weather conditions, wet surroundings, humidity and odors.
