What are the responsibilities and job description for the Meteorologist - Air Monitoring (Health Services) position at Shelby County Government?
Position Summary
This position is funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grantor.
This position works under the supervision of the manager. Performs data management and analysis, prepares descriptive and analytical reports, provides data support and technical assistance to the Environmental Health program staff, and fulfills internal and external data requests. Performs the duties of tracking, surveillance, evaluation, and reporting objectives of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Monitors air quality by preparing daily pollution forecasts for the Memphis region for ozone and particulate matter.
2. Investigates stationary source air quality impacts using EPA-approved regulatory modeling tools.
3. Investigates regional meteorological and pollution data that influence pollution transport and concentrations.
4. Researches emerging trends and topics by participating in regional and national committees on emissions, modeling, and climate change.
5. Evaluates forecast performance and yearly program advancements to develop and/or improve regional ozone forecast tools.
6. Informs, educates, and empowers the public about air quality issues by disseminating the daily air quality forecast to the media, EPA, and other interested parties.
7. Evaluates model accuracy by compiling and computing seasonal forecasts and monitoring statistics.
8. Develops and maintains a meteorological database for use in trend and modeling analysis.
9. Investigates causes of poor air quality by performing post-exceedance air quality studies.
10. Evaluates appropriate planning area boundary recommendations to municipal, county, and state leadership.
11. Assures competence by attending periodic training to remain current with changes in laws and regulations, pollution control technology, and Shelby County policy and procedures.
12. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

1. Ability to analyze and record data on global weather stations, satellites, and radars.
2. Ability to interpret from the land, sea, and atmosphere patterns.
3. Ability to provide weather reports.
4. Ability to apply mathematical and physical formulas and use computer modeling applications to make predictions.
5. Ability to research and predict ozone models.
6. Knowledge of current technological developments.
7. Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) or similar software.
