What are the responsibilities and job description for the Miscellaneous Temp - FORENSIC NURSE (Crime Victims Center) position at Shelby County Government?
Position Summary
Works under the general direction of the CVRCC Nursing Coordinator to provide nursing care to victims of sexual assault.
Pay Grade: 56H
Minimum Qualifications
1. Graduate of an accredited R.N. program and holds a master’s degree or higher from an accredited Nursing program.
2. Licensed as an R.N. and as an Advanced Practice Nurse with a certificate of fitness for prescribing; AND
3. Certified through ANCC or AANP as a Nurse Practitioner.
4. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Interviews victims of sexual violence for histories of assault
2. Performs physical exams of adults and children and documents accurately
3. Correctly documents injuries, pertinent physical findings, and child development through clear digital photographs on agency camera
4. Collects evidence from victims
5. Correctly packages this evidence, following standard chain of evidence procedure
6. Provides age-appropriate nursing care, regulated by the Tennessee Nurse Practice Act
7. Provides prophylactic treatment for certain STDs and pregnancy, utilizing standard medical protocol
8. Refers for emergency care and follow-up as appropriate.
9. Testifies as an expert witness in Criminal, Juvenile, and Federal Courts
10. Participates in the training of nurses and physicians.
11. Attends after-hours Nursing staff meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to assess victims of sexual violence and determine their physical and psychosocial needs.
2. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with victims, family members, law enforcement, personnel from other agencies, and staff.
3. Ability to provide individualized, compassionate, professional, and culturally sensitive care to victims and make appropriate decisions in a timely manner.
4. Ability to use Microsoft Office and FileMaker programs.
Special Requirements
1. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
2. Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
3. Must be willing to be “on-call” as scheduled and willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
4. Must complete the Orientation/Training phase of employment within three months of start.
