What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outside Sales Rep position at Shell Lumber & Hardware?
A) Business Development
- Help find new customers & prospects. (New active jobsites, construction companies, architects, builders, designers, etc. As well as municipalities, institutions; like schools, government agencies etc.) Opening new accounts & growing existing accounts. Getting bids, quotes, on materials we supply. Closing deals, booking sales, processing orders for customers.
- Make cold calls to new business customers, as well as make “P.R” public relations call on existing accounts. (Request for new account to be opened from new customers you find. Call on existing customers, thank them for their continued business & try to see what other products or services we can provide. Update the account for current signers & set-up offers & value-added benefits to gain more of their business.)
- Responsible for setting up appointments, following up with customers & prospects. Keeping up with account activity & acting on leads or referrals that may arise. (On existing customers after visited by a salesman you’ll keep a customer folder up to date with communications, orders, quotes, etc. On new customers you will create a folder as soon as you make contact & follow through till account is open or finally rejected.) All jobsite stops are logged into your outlook calendar by taking a picture of the project while you’re on site. Add all visit notes (GC company name, contact person, offers, job phase, next call or visit etc.) to the email you send yourself with the jobsite picture attached and also copy the sales manager, then add to your digital customer file and schedule follow-up.
B) Promotional Materials
Make sure you have enough binders, packets, catalogs and information in your vehicle to distribute every morning before going out on the road.
Large Yellow Binder
Contains sectional dividers with a small sample of the wide variety of product lines we sell.
- Customize binders to the clients’ specific needs if necessary.
Catalog Packet
Contains the Shell Lumber Catalog, company information & contact list. This folder will be primarily used and it gives them a condensed information package about our products and services.
· Updated daily before leaving the store with two-week expiration on the sales flyers if applicable.
· Personalize the additional catalogs to the type of clients being visited.

C) Business Development Mileage Log
Every day you must keep a record of your mileage usage on the weekly log. You must
Document your mileage every morning before leaving the DC or Shell and every afternoon when arriving back at the Shell or after last customer stop.
· Expense Log & Weekly Mileage Log must be turned in every Friday afternoon to Bookkeeping. You will be reimbursed in your next payroll paycheck.
D) Business Development Daily Stop Log
Every stop must be documented. There are no excuses! This includes the times you
Stopped to get gas or eat etc. Every stop counts.
· Include the time you began the activity and the time it ended. Document the location, contact, reason/outcome for the stop, and make sure to place a checkmark or note on the Add to Schedule column if it was a new visit added to your daily schedule.
· You must turn in your Daily Stop Log to Sales Manager at the end of each business day or next morning if you finish your day outside. You must also give your folders with their corresponding notes for updates in the calendar.
Ø Business Development Outside Sales Rep Payroll Structure
· Salesmen hourly wage; $16.00per hour, 5 Day Work week Monday-Saturday 5 hours of Overtime weekly (45hrs weeks), Saturdays are rotational.
· All outside salesmen must have a valid driver’s license at all times and must be approved by our insurance carrier to drive our fleet of vehicles.
· All outside salesmen must have their own Smart Phones. It must be able to take pictures, send emails, run Google sync apps for mail and calendar etc. Shell will pay salesmen’s phone and data line up to $50 per month.

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
