Salary : Determined based on experience, local wages, and nonprofit industry rates.
Education
- Bachelors degree required in accounting or finance from an accredited college or university
- Masters degree and CMA or CPA license preferred
Experience

General Responsibilities
Compile monthly financial statements and budget variances.Prepare annual budget and ensure spending are within the approved budgetMeet with the Finance Committee to review the prepared financial statements and make recommendations of variancesServe as Finance Committee staff liaisonMonitor all financial transactions, including payment of invoices, deposits of revenue, reconciliation of bank statements, and special reports a requestedSupervise accounting staffFinance Responsibilities
Direct the financial operations of the ShelterSupervise the accounting functions and provide support to staff to complete the mission of the ShelterAssist on strategic matters relating to budget management, cost-benefit analysis, forecasting needs, and internal controlDevelop policies to control and coordinate accounting, auditing, budgets, taxes and related activities and recordsDevelop, establish, and administer procedures and systems pertaining to financial mattersPrepare operating budgets and financial forecasts in coordination with stakeholdersForecast and analyze administrative and managerial functionsDevelop, analyze, and interpret statistical and accounting informationEvaluate operating results for costs, revenues, budgets, policies of operation, trends, and increased profit possibilitiesSupervise the staffing, scheduling, training, and professional development of department members.Formulate, receive, and recommend policy proposals relating to accounting and auditing, the budget, revenue and cost control procedures, preparation and payment of payrolls, tax matters, compilation of statistics, and office methods and procedures.Verify reports to agencies, trade associations, and professional organizations for disseminationReview monthly ledgers including receivables, payables, bank and other asset accounts, and wage accountsInform and advise department managers on financial aspects respectivelyEnsure preparation of applicable federal, state, and local tax returnsReview ad hoc reports as necessary and disseminate to respective stakeholdersSelect, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate staffAttend monthly Board of Directors meetings and other meetings as requiredCompile, approve, and maintain credit applications for vendorsReview fixed asset ledgers and depreciation schedules monthlyManage assigned projects relating to department and Shelter needsReview cash sheets to ensure all receipts have been postedAudit all cash and charge expenditures.Setup safeguards for all funds in bank accountsEnsure revenues are properly and correctly deposited and supervise issuance of all checksFollow investment program approved by Board and perform investment of all excess funds timely to maximize cash flow returnPlan professional development and training activities for staffSeek current accounting practices with peers in the same industry as necessaryPlan and manage capital budgets and cash flow statements with respective department managersReview bank account reconciliationMaintain necessary procedures for confidentiality relating to participants and employee issuesProvide financial insights and viability for decision-making on long-range planning of the ShelterGuide the CEO and department managers on financial stability of the ShelterMaintain a system of accounts and keep books and records on all transactions and assetsEnsure financials will be due by an agreed upon day of the following monthPrepare a schedule of financials due dates to be shared annually to the CEO and Finance CommitteeManage payroll, using various tools and partnering with the payroll services company employed by the Shelter to deliver flawless paymentsSupervise the Finance Department and assign jobs relevant to accounts payable / accounts receivableAssist in the management of compliance and all reconciliationsWork with managers to develop the annual budgetAbide by all current Shelter stated policies and proceduresEnsure that all financial transactions are processed accurately, in a timely manner, and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principlesDevelop, implement, and maintain processes and controls that are currently best practices related to transaction processingManage, oversee, process (as appropriate), and act as a backup for processing the following transactions : payroll, accounts payable, revenue and expense, fixed assets, cash, bank reconciliations, and allocationsOversee month-end closing procedures including overhead allocations, account reconciliations, and updating schedulesAssist in coordinating the preparation of the draft audited financial statements and all tax returnsCoordinate the preparation of financial information for the corporate annual reportRecommend and report on benchmarks against which to measure organizational performanceLead the production of cash flow reports, annual budget, and forecastsCalculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to the CEOProvide for a system of management cost reportsProvide financial analyses and models as needed, particularly for capital investments of Shelter reserves, pricing decisions, and contract negotiationsPrepare and assist in developing audit schedules for the annual auditGather needed information for the annual tax returnOversee state registration filingsGrant Writing Responsibilities
Assist in preparation of grant applicationsPrepare and submit monthly reimbursement requestsPrepare donor reportsOversee compliance with non-program grant stipulationsPrepare budgets for staff covered under grants and monitor and update staff to ensure funds are being spent timelyAdministrative Responsibilities
