POSITION TITLE: Development Manager


SUPERVISOR: Executive Director

CLASSIFICATION: Salaried, exempt

SCHEDULE: Full time, 40 hours, Monday through Friday (8a-4p or 9a-5p). Occasional evening and weekend work required.

LOCATION: Onsite at Outreach Center (1415 Sachem Place, Charlottesville VA 22901); onsite at Residential Facility (undisclosed location within Charlottesville area); and travel within Planning District Ten (City of Charlottesville and Counties of Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, and Fluvanna)

ANNUAL SALARY: $80,000. The Shelter for Help in Emergency is in the midst of a two-year organization-wide compensation adjustment that includes the implementation of a consistent, transparent, and objective pay bands. As a result, compensation is not negotiable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All Shelter for Help in Emergency Staff are required to pass the organization’s Suitability to Work with Minors Policy which requires fingerprinting and criminal background checks.


POSITION SUMMARY: As the Development Manager, you will lead efforts to secure financial resources for the Shelter and cultivate strong donor relationships. You will support the organization’s financial sustainability by pursuing and maintaining public and private funding partnerships. You know how to craft compelling content for fundraising campaigns, and you have planned and carried out successful fundraising events in a variety of formats. You are a creative, organized, and mission-driven leader with exceptional communication skills. You understand the philanthropic landscape and how to adapt when new needs and trends emerge.


To protect the safety of survivors and staff, you will maintain confidentiality in all reports and communications. Strong organizational and time management skills are essential to this role, along with the ability to learn new software and databases.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

A. Consistently embody the values of the Shelter for Help in Emergency when interacting with human beings

  • Practice and promote antiracist, trauma-informed, person-centered, strengths-based, and harm-reductive responses to human beings
  • Communicate assertively, clearly, thoroughly, and with solutions in mind
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, mutual support and respect, creativity, and excellence
  • Maintain impeccable confidentiality of client identities and facility location
  • Promote nonviolent speech and behavior
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to disagree constructively while options are being considered, and to then fully commit to the ultimate decision, even if it isn't the decision you would have made
  • Provide feedback to team members that is truthful, timely, specific, and non-judgmental and receive feedback with curiosity, respect, and a commitment to continuous growth and professional development


B. Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and continually assess comprehensive fundraising plan with Executive Director
  • With Executive Director, lead the organization’s Fundraising Committee and provide relevant, timely updates at monthly meetings
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director on matters related to fundraising and development
  • Serve as an active member of the Leadership Team and actively contributes to policy setting and long-term planning for the organization


C. Grant funding

  • Regularly research government, foundation, and corporate funding opportunities and apply when appropriate
  • Maintain existing grant relationships including regularly and proactively meeting with funder’s program officers, identifying changes to funding guidelines, and maintaining a calendar of application due dates
  • Prepare materials for funding applications including narratives and client data and submit all applications on time
  • Monitor grant workplan performance for goal achievement progress
  • Develop contingency plans for potential loss of funding from established sources
  • Identify funding opportunities for new initiatives and emerging needs and manage these application processes


D. Donor outreach and stewardship

  • Maintain complete and orderly database of past, current, and potential donor information and donations using Little Green Light CRM
  • With Fiscal Manager, monitor and analyze fundraising data for effectiveness using Little Green Light and QuickBooks Online
  • Plan and distribute regular donor communications including thank-you notes, email newsletter, and client stories
  • Lead development of a planned giving program, utilizing existing Board and donor connections
  • Give public presentations on the Shelter and its programs to attract new donors, often with the Executive Director
  • Develop and implement segmented donor cultivation strategies for existing donors
  • Identify and pursue new donor relationships regularly by researching potential donors to gain insight into needs, values, and trends and tailor communications accordingly


E. Fundraising events and activities

  • Plan and carry out fundraising events including coordinating staff and volunteer support
  • Lead annual appeal process, including designing and distributing relevant communications
  • With Executive Director, develop and implement strategy for major gift campaign
  • Create marketing materials, such as social media posts, flyers, and brochures, to be used for fundraising event promotion
  • Complete post-event analysis to highlight successes and identify areas of improvement


F. Team and organizational collaboration

  • Attend and actively participate in regular one-on-one, team, and organization-wide meetings as assigned
  • Strengthen connections and communication with other teams to support grant writing and other fundraising efforts
  • Monitor and analyze fundraising data and progress with Fiscal Manager
  • Submit timesheets accurately and promptly


G. Pursue and participate in professional development opportunities

  • Seek out professional development opportunities relevant to role and responsibilities, as well as to the Shelter for Help in Emergency’s mission
  • Attend training as assigned by supervisor


REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising through relationship building, tact, and diplomacy
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Familiarity with the local philanthropic landscape
  • Compassion for all people, especially those in crisis
  • Naturally resourceful and curious
  • Experience working with humans of diverse racial, linguistic, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to constructively provide and receive feedback
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and wise decision making
  • Understanding of boundaries and self-care practices and ability to consistently implement them
  • Ability to improvise and adapt to changing circumstances
  • Comfortable with computers and able to learn new software programs including databases
  • Reliable, punctual, detail-oriented, and organized
  • Driver’s license and personal vehicle not required but must have access to reliable transportation


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Understanding of the power and control dynamics of intimate partner violence
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Experience with Little Green Light or other CRM
