Position Overview:
The Sheltercare Program of Northern Virginia is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic part-time Community Counselors for the Care Center Community Resource and Reporting Center. This program serves at-risk youth ages 10-17 in Alexandria, VA, providing afterschool support, life skills development, and therapeutic interventions in a safe and supportive environment.
Community Counselors will play a vital role in supervising and supporting youth, leading groups, and helping them develop essential life skills while ensuring the program runs smoothly. Counselors will also transport youth from school and to other locations as needed to support their participation in the program.
Key Responsibilities:
· Direct Youth Engagement
o Supervise and engage with youth at all times to ensure safety and well-being.
o Lead psychoeducational groups, life skills activities, and recreational opportunities.
o Assist youth with developing crisis plans and behavior support plans.
o Conduct individual meetings with youth to address treatment goals and progress.
o Facilitate family engagement activities and support family communication.
· Transportation
o Transport youth from school to the program and for other necessary transportation needs, ensuring safe and timely arrival.
· Administrative and Documentation Tasks
o Collect and organize program data for reporting purposes.
o Assist with treatment plans, court reports, and other required documentation.
· Program Support and Community Engagement
o Coordinate academic support and tutoring sessions.
o Support youth with independent living skills, career readiness, and job preparedness.
o Participate in community service projects and recreational activities with youth.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth in a residential, community-based, or educational setting preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
- Ability to lead groups and facilitate structured activities.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Flexibility and ability to work evenings.
- High school diploma required; some college coursework in social work, psychology, or related fields preferred.
Schedule and Hours:
- During the school year: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday
- Summer hours: 8 hours per day for 16 days (June 9 – June 30, 2025)
o Total work hours: Approximately 30 hours per week during the school year and 35 hours per week during the summer.
Compensation:
- Competitive hourly rate based on experience.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $22.00 - $27.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 per week
Schedule:
- 4 hour shift
- After school
- Monday to Friday
