What are the responsibilities and job description for the Colorguard/Dance Instructor position at Shenandoah University?
The Shenandoah University Marching Band is searching for a Colorguard/Dance Instructor. This is a one-year contract stipend position that reports to the Director of Athletic Bands and Colorguard/Dance Coordinator. The Colorguard/Dance Instructor will be responsible for instructing the Colorguard/Dance section of the Shenandoah University Marching Band.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to developing movement techniques, writing flag work and choreography for performances, and assisting with band rehearsals.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Director of Athletic Bands, instructional staff, and student leadership to ensure that each student achieves success in a positive and constructive manner.
- Attendance at camp, rehearsals, and performances.
- Instruction of fundamental techniques for movement, flag work, and weapons.
- Oversee the rehearsals of the Colorguard/Dance in sections and full band settings.
- Assist with teaching movement and choreography to Colorguard/Dance members.
- Assist with developing student leadership skills within the Colorguard/Dance section.
- Choreograph all movement, flag, weapon, and pom utilization for the Colorguard/Dance section.
- Manage equipment and communicate any needs for student success.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletic Bands.
Required Skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
- Previous experience instructing Colorguard/Dance at various levels is preferred.
- Experience writing choreography is preferred.
- Experience with Flags and Poms is preferred.
- Experience with weapons preferred.
- Management, leadership, and communication skills are required.
Camp Dates and Rehearsal Time
- Band Camp Aug.15-29
- Rehearsals Tuesday and Thursday evenings 4-6pm
- Occasional Friday rehearsals 7-9pm
- Football Games on Saturdays
