Job Summary:The Fiber Technician Senior position is accountable for maintaining and expanding Shentel's fiber optic network. The senior technician is a lead field position, working in various weather conditions, and is responsible for complex fiber preparation, splicing, installation and the repair of fiber optic cable from the POP to the customer premise using tools and fusion splicing equipment. Under minimal supervision, leads other fiber technicians and contractors, performing testing and certification of fiber. Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with customers, contractors, and company personnel.
Qualification Requirements:a. Education: AS degree in a relevant engineering or technology field is desired. Other candidates with a strong technical background and substantial industry or military experience will be considered.b. Experience Level: i. 3 or more years of fiber splicing experience ii. 3 or more years of experience in the telecommunications industry iii. 3 or more years of experience with fiber network/installation/maintenance/constructionc. Special Requirements: i. Work aloft up to 50’ in a bucket truck, ladder, or climb utility poles ii. Work in confined spaces (manholes, vaults, etc.) iii. Distinguish between different colors iv. Able and willing to work outdoors and in inclement weather v. Ability to work independently and deal tactfully and effectively with the public and staff vi. Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds vii. Valid driver’s licensed. Skill Requirements: *Ability to fusion splice both loose tube single and ribbon fibers. *Ability to prep and splice a mid-sheath "ring-cut" splice. *Ability to use all test equipment (OTDR, fiber scope, identifier, etc) to validate fiber. *Experience w/ Exfo FastReporter, or relevant software, to produce fiber analysis reports. *Ability to distinguish between different fiber color codes and strands. *Ability to ribbonize loose tube fibers. *Ability to be on-call 24 hours a day for emergency repair. *Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as the needs of the business necessitate. *Ability to work independently, work with teams and communicate effectively. *Ability to lead fiber splicing teams. *Ability to read, understand, and follow engineering drawings/schematics. *Ability to complete Light Brigade Certification, or relevant certification: Fiber Optics 1-2-3, Advanced OSP Technician, and Fiber Characterization Fundamentals. *Meticulous attention to detail, standards, and documentation. *Basic computer skills.
