What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Youth Ministry Director position at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church?
Purpose: The Middle School Youth Ministry Director will lead middle school ministry to support the faith formation and confirmation education of 6th - 8th grade students, and empower and develop student leaders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Children, Youth, and Family Ministry or related field preferred
- Demonstrated experience in a professional youth ministry programming and leadership position with a large congregation preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of scripture and Lutheran doctrine
- Demonstrated experience in planning and leading large group and small group events
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, social media apps, and database software
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Effective relationship building skills
- Effective organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated skills in the areas related to teaching and presentations
- Successful completion of criminal background check and annual motor vehicle record check as performed by SOTV
Expectations:
- Passion for student engagement in Youth Ministry programs and faith development opportunities
- Ability to maintain schedule of programs (i.e. Confirmation, Milestone Events)
- Flexibility in hours and scheduling as needed including support of worship as needed to represent CYF ministry
- Comfortable speaking and leading in front of large groups
- Ability to work independently, as well as, in a team setting
- Comfortable recruiting and leading volunteers of all ages (youth – adults)
- Demonstrated initiative, positive attitude, independent work ethic, and ability to tackle work assignments with minimal supervision
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
I. Weekly Program: 6th-8th Grade Confirmation
a. Develop, lead, and coordinate weekly programming for middle school youth to support the values of, including but not limited to, biblical learning, worship, serving and giving, Caring relationships, and Rituals and faith practices
b. Communicate and connect with parents as appropriate including weekly communication emails.
c. Support weekend worship as needed to represent CYF ministries
i. Meet 1:1 with students in preparation for the Rite of Confirmation
ii. Good News for Kids
iii. CYF representation, team support, and visibility
iv. Registration weekends
II. Middle School Ministry
a. Provide care ministry as appropriate to youth and volunteers
b. Develop and plan summer immersion and camp experiences for middle school youth
c. Coordinate and lead a minimum of one summer immersion opportunity for SOTV youth
d. Evaluate and reimagine current programs in collaboration with leadership to expand and grow
III. Fellowship Events
a. Develop, lead, and coordinate fellowship events as appropriate for middle school youth, including but not limited to Run Ragged and Middle School Madness
b. Develop, lead, and coordinate milestone celebrations as appropriate for middle school youth
c. Provide a positive and invitational presence at high school fellowship events
d. Debrief events with staff and/or leaders as appropriate
e. Year-end evaluations and/or surveys as appropriate
IV. Volunteer Management
a. Recruit, equip, and thank volunteers as appropriate to support youth ministry
b. Oversee, schedule, and communicate with all volunteer teams regularly
V. Administrative Duties
a. Coordinate event registrations with CYF Admin or other appropriate staff coordinators
b. Provide materials/handouts/supplements as needed and oversee assembly of resources
c. Participate in all-CYF team / all-church / all-staff functions as appropriately scheduled
d. Participate in staff meetings as appropriate
e. Participate in regularly scheduled supervisor meetings
f. Participate in review process
