Job Summary / Basic Function
The job location is at Tabler Farm and transportation is the responsibility of the employee.
Safety training will be provided on the use or handling of all power tools and the operations of the farm, as this is part of the requirements for this position.
Tabler Farm has a climate-controlled breakdown with a fridge and microwave, a bathroom on site and a covered pavilion with picnic tables that all farm employees, workers, members, and volunteers are encouraged to utilize.
Tabler Farm operates in most weather conditions.
Tasks for the day may shift depending on weather. The farm has a "30
- 100" high tunnel to work in if outside weather conditions are unfavorable for necessary tasks. Workers should check the weather forecast prior to their shift and dress accordingly.
Weather conditions that potentially cancel a work shift : Torrential rain, heavy snowfall, extreme wind, extreme thunderstorms, extreme heat (heat index higher than 95F), extreme cold / wind-chill (temperatures below 10F). The Farm Manager will make the call for work to be cancelled and will provide as much notice as possible.
Experience in the following areas are suggested for this position; gardening, construction, painting, carpentry and light mechanical knowledge.
Appropriate farm-wear dependent on weather conditions :
Farming can be physically demanding and repetitive. Employees are expected to bring ample water to drink throughout their time at the farm. Eating a nutritious and energizing meal prior to working shift and being well rested is highly recommended. Know your own limits and don't be afraid to speak up when you need a break or would like to switch to a different task.
Employees will often engage with farm visitors, students, and volunteers. You are representing Tabler Farm, please remember to greet guests in a welcoming fashion and offer to help and guide as needed.
Use of farm tools, supplies and equipment
Tabler Farm has a wide range of tools, supplies and equipment used for vegetable production. All tools, supplies, and equipment are the property of Shepherd University's Tabler Farm and should be used with proper training and care. No equipment should ever leave the farm without prior agreements made with the Farm Manager.
The Student Employee will be trained on the use of the following equipment, but not limited to :
Employees are expected to use the above farm equipment when applicable. All equipment should be properly stored when not in use. Any equipment issues should be documented and reported to the Farm Manager.
Employees will have access to and expected to use a wide variety of farm tools and supplies for various applications such as : bed preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting. All tools and supplies should be properly stored when not in use. Tools should never be left on the ground or in a production field. If a tool was left out or find a tool left out, they should report it to the Farm Manager.
Shift Policies :
Employees are expected to arrive on time for shifts; 15- minute flex arrival time.
If a worker is unexpectedly running late or cannot make their shift, they should notify their supervisor via text ASAP. If an employee plans to be absent for a scheduled shift, they should provide 2 weeks' notice. You may also request time off with a one week notice to your supervisor.
Exceptions for short notice : illness, emergencies.
Employees must sign in / out of their shifts. Your supervisor will review your recorded hours based on your work schedule. You will be paid bi-weekly.
Any day the university is closed, Tabler farm is also closed you will not be expected to report to work.
