Job Overview
Shepherd University seeks a dedicated and skilled professional to serve as an Area Coordinator in our Residence Life department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing essential leadership to staff and students living within residential hall communities.
As an Area Coordinator, you will have regular interactions with staff and students in a variety of contexts. You will demonstrate excellent leadership, communication, motivation, and administrative skills in a dynamic and engaging organization. This 12-month, live-in position requires additional overnight and weekend coverage for on-call responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree and prior experience in a leadership role, preferably in a college setting. A commitment to supporting resident success and fostering inclusive communities based on mutual respect is essential. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are also necessary.
In this role, you will supervise, train, and evaluate undergraduate Resident Assistant (RA) staff members. You will lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of community engagement programs and interactions for residents which foster an inclusive community and promote persistence. You will serve as a positive, visible role model and solution-focused individual to encourage community development, student learning, and success in residential communities.
You will practice solid administrative skills to manage multiple demands related to housing assignments, building management, programming, purchasing, budgets, and other daily tasks. You will assume responsibility for the daily operations and management of designated residence halls such as submitting work orders, assessing building and room conditions, conducting health and safety inspections, and billing if appropriate. You will serve in an on-call/on-duty rotation to provide support for approximately 800 residential students living in four communities.
A Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or related field is preferred. Prior experience in Residence Life or Housing operation, crisis management, conflict resolution, and/or emergency response, community engagement, activity planning, or similar is also beneficial.
This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Residence Life and serves as a member of the Campus Services division and partners with the Student Affairs division. You will participate in all hall openings, closings, and transitions, and participate in summer initiatives such as housing roles related to overnight housing and preparation for the next academic year. You will serve as a Responsible Employee in compliance with Title IX and as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, ensuring timely reporting of incidents and/or crimes.
