What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Extern - Towson, MD or Elkridge, MD position at Sheppard & Enoch Pratt Hospital?
What to expect.
Sheppard Pratt’s Nurse Extern Program is an 8-week paid opportunity for nursing students in their final year or semester of an associate, bachelor’s or graduate nursing program at an accredited school.
You’ll have your choice of completing the program at the Towson campus, the Baltimore/Washington campus, or a combination of both - depending on which patient populations you are interested in working with.
As a nurse extern, you will:
- Engage in clinical observations across diverse disciplines and treatment approaches.
- Attend care team meetings and participate in planning and evaluating patient needs based on patient behaviors.
- Assist in providing a safe and therapeutic environment according to established policies and procedures.
Program schedule:
- Thursday, June 12th: first day (in-person at the Towson hospital campus)
- Friday, June 13th: training modules (virtual)
- Monday, June 16th – Friday, June 20th: clinical orientation (40-hour week at the Towson hospital campus)
- Monday, June 23rd – Friday, August 8th: Hands-on program (16 hours per week at the hospital of your choice)
- Mandatory 4-hour seminars will be held every other Friday at the Towson campus for the duration of the program.

- Upon completing the program, you’ll be eligible for a $2,000 tuition reimbursement when you join Sheppard Pratt as a PRN mental health worker.
- Extended clinical orientation led by Sheppard Pratt’s Clinical Education Department to prepare you for the responsibilities of your role.

What we need from you.
- Must be entering your final year or semester of an associate, bachelor’s, or graduate nursing program at an accredited school.
- Possession of a current basic life support (BLS) certification prior to orientation.
- Demonstrated competency throughout Sheppard Pratt’s extended clinical orientation.
