General Summary:
Under the direction of the Vice President and Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Senior Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for directing, managing and executing the Institutional Foundation strategy for Sheppard Pratt. This includes identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding private and some public foundations, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, as appropriate, and doing the same for businesses, corporations and corporate foundations. The Senior Director is responsible for the research, planning, solicitation, proposal process, implementation, and monitoring of awarded grants, sponsorships, and donor support. Designs and implements fund raising plans to generate support for Sheppard Pratt’s priorities from foundations and corporations. Writes grants and other proposals. Cultivates and maintains effective relationships with prospects and donor representatives.
The Senior Director directs and manages the Director of Corporate Giving and works closely with the Office of Sponsored Projects.
It is expected that the Senior Director will raise at least $1M from foundations in year one, and raise $3M after year 2. It is expected that the Institutional Giving division will raise at least $1.3M in year one and raise $3.750 million after year 2.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:
Building Relationships
- Actively seeks to enhance Sheppard Pratt’s initiatives to meet the needs of patients, families, donors, trustees, staff, local businesses, government, communities, national organizations, and foundations.
- Promotes and maintains positive relationships with donors, staff, physicians, clinicians, and patient families.
- Creates strong relationships with foundation and corporate prospects and donors.
- Networking in the community, attending events and representing Sheppard Pratt locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, as appropriate.
Planning
- Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards foundations and corporations.
- Establishes long-term partnerships and strengthens existing relationships with the foundation and corporate sector, as well as other key communities that will result in funding for the immediate and long-term goals of Sheppard Pratt.
- Identifies and researches sources of support, proactively seeking opportunities to generate new proposals based on foundation guidelines and interests, and by maintaining strong communication ties with foundation and corporate donors and prospects.
- Designs fund raising strategies to generate support for Sheppard Pratt’s priorities.
- Develops a long-term strategy for Foundation Giving and Corporate Giving.
Donor Solicitation
- Maintains an active portfolio of Foundation prospects and donors. Conveys funding interests to Sheppard Pratt constituencies and, when appropriate, involves staff in the solicitation process.
- Develops new relationships with donors with a special emphasis on expanding to more regional, national and international donors.
Proposals
- Monitors proposal deadlines to prioritize opportunities.
- Prepares and edits proposals and reviews all proposal submissions for foundation support.
Donor Administration & Management
- Creates and manages a tracking system for all foundation donors.
- Provides reports and briefings on funding and outreach activities to the CDO and others as requested.
- Assures that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful foundation partnerships.
- Responsible for special projects, such as cause-related marketing and venture philanthropy opportunities, as needed to advance the mission and effectiveness of the foundation efforts.
Management
- Directs and manages the Director of Corporate Giving. Leads by example, ensuring the Director of Corporate Giving follows suit in proposal and donor related activities.
- Works closely with the office of special projects and the finance and budgeting office.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
1. Requires bachelor’s degree and 10 years of non-profit fundraising experience, with an emphasis on foundation giving.
2. Health care fundraising background preferred, mental and behavioral healthcare experience a plus.
3. Must have experience managing a team.
4. Work requires problem solving and conceptual skills using data to make recommendations and implement major and planned giving strategies.
5. Work requires strong oral and written communication skills, superior interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide variety of Sheppard Pratt employees, physicians, prospects, and donors, and the excitement and ability to speak knowledgeably and persuasively on behalf of Sheppard Pratt to potential donors and patient families.
6. Work requires meeting deadlines, responding promptly to donor requests for information, and managing the demands of multiple projects.
7. Work requires advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and Raisers Edge fundraising software.

Pay for this position is determined on a number of factors, including but not limited to, years and level of related experience.
