What are the responsibilities and job description for the Day Camp Counselor position at Sheridan County YMCA?
POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Resident Camp Director, the Resident Camp Counselor is responsible for providing a safe environment for campers and counselors as well as acting as a positive supportive role model. While this position pays on a daily basis, camp staff are expected to work the entire weekly session (Monday - Friday).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All Day Camp Counselors are expected to fulfill the following functions:
- Engage with parents during morning drop off and afternoon pick up.
- Work with an assigned group of 8-12 campers and always be responsible for the group.
- Always know the number of kids that are in your group.
- Be responsive to campers’ needs and wherever possible involve the group in the decision making.
- Assist in coaching of LIT’s who have volunteered during a week of camp.
- At all times will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all campers throughout the camp session.
- Assist in making sure all the kids get signed out of camp each afternoon.
- Assist with camp clean up.
In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, the Day Camp Counselor will:
- Pursue/participate in ongoing camp training.
- Participate in the annual campaign by giving, campaigning or both
- Attend daily staff meetings
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and switch tasks as new challenges and projects emerge.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 14 years of age.
- Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
- CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
- New Employee Orientation within 90 days of hire.
