    JOB DESCRIPTION
    JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal
    LOCATION: Sheridan High School
    WORK YEAR: 215 workdays
    WORK STATUS: Administrative, Exempt
    REPORTS TO: School Principal

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    Responsible for providing primary administrative support to the principal; assumes a significant role in the improvement of student achievement, program management, student discipline and human resource management including the supervision and evaluation of school staff.



    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Instructional Leadership
    • Assists with and supports the development and use of student performance standards.
    • Understands the processes of curriculum development and effective models of instruction.
    • Assists the principal and staff in the development of fair and accurate assessment methods.
    • Uses data to analyze the current state of student learning and serve as a catalyst for and manager of needed change.
    • Assists in the coaching of effective classroom practices; helps supervise and coordinate the instructional program of the school.
    • Provides leadership for committees, task forces and other groups involved with the curriculum, assessments, instructional development, and other aspects of the overall school program.
    • Assists and supports Principal with providing regular instructional feedback and staff evaluations.
    • Understand and lead the use of technology in instruction.
    • Assists and supports Principal with leading professional development, organizational and system development.
    Management
    • Assists with the direction and supervision of licensed and non-licensed personnel; may conduct performance evaluations.
    • May recruit and screen potential employees, may make hiring recommendations to the principal.
    • May make or take part in decisions relative to employee discipline.
    • May be responsible for the preparation of required federal, state, and local reports.
    • Apply good judgment to ensure student safety and carry out student discipline.
    • Supports the principal in the establishment of behavioral expectations for students and staff toward the creation of a respectful and civil environment.
    • Assists and supports Principal with student discipline, parent contact and follow up communication.
    • Assumes oversight of various extra-curricular activities and other student, school, and community events.



    Human Relations/Community building
    • Assists with guiding the development of a caring community that includes all stakeholders in the school.
    • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with and among the school staff and community.
    • Actively promotes positive attention to behaviors which recognize and appreciate the diversity of the total school community.
    • Daily contact with parents, students, and law enforcement officials to exchange information and resolve issues.
    • Assist principal in the following areas: Regular contact with vendors, media, legislatures, and government entities to exchange information; work with higher education, partnerships, and businesses to exchange information, develop and maintain programs, maintain relationships, and foster program participation; and work with district attorneys to exchange information regarding legal matters.

    Leadership/ Professional Responsibilities
    • Demonstrated knowledge and use of District policies, procedures, employee contracts, and legal requirements.
    • Demonstrated conflict management, problem solving, resource allocation, prioritization, data analysis, collaborative decision making, relationship building, group facilitation, writing, and speaking skills.
    • Seeks and participates in professional development activities.
    • Provides a regular presence at program-related functions outside the regular school day.
    • Accepts responsibility and opportunities for participation in district-level activities such as task forces, special committees.
    • Acts consistently in a professional manner that reflects the stature and importance of the leadership role of the assistant principal.
    • Performs other applicable duties as outlined in the job description and as assigned by the Principal.

    SPAN OF CONTROL
    Assists the principal in the supervision of counselors, teachers, school resource officers, coaches, club sponsors, classified employees, and others as assigned.Assist principal with carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    COMPLEXITY OF WORK
    Requires analytical skills, independent thinking, considerable judgment, and the ability to assess crises and make sound decisions quickly with little time or input from others. Assists with managing personnel, curriculum, student success and discipline, and physical plant. Must have a strong understanding of student behavior, District culture and policies, and be able to quickly analyze the impact of decisions on the student, school, District, and community. Generally, work is complicated by the volume of students at the school site, large budget management responsibilities, and the diversity and severity of student issues and crises.

    SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
    Supervises and participates in evaluation of personnel; schedules and directs work, may make hiring and termination recommendations, and may provide professional development training.


    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
    Master’s Degree
    One to three years or equivalent experience in a leadership role


    Licenses or Certifications
    Appropriate Administrator licensure as required by the state of Colorado.


    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions required the following physical demands: some lifting to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling: and signification fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. This job is performed in generally a clean and healthy environment.
