POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Elementary Library Media Secretary
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISORS: Site Principal
POSITION SUMMARY: Assists the administrator and school staff in the organization and maintaining of operational routines expected of an elementary school library media center along with any required record keeping and generation of relevant reports. Has primary responsibility for essential acquisition and processing of library media materials, updating collections, developing and implementing procedures and practices for instruction and use of library media services and resources.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in developing the school’s library media program as well as policies and procedures for the program’s implementation.
- Keeps current on district’s library media curriculum, policies and procedures.
- Creates an atmosphere conducive to learning that promotes effective use of library media services and resources.
- Organizes for, schedules and supervises use of the school’s library media services and resources.
- Provides instruction in the use of library media services and resources
- Assists in providing activities that respond to themes, curriculum objectives and learning levels of the diverse student population
- Establishes efficient acquisition and processing procedures
- Provides and maintains varied and up-to-date collections
- Maintains supplies and places orders as needed
- Gathers, organizes, stores and retrieves pertinent data
- Operates business machines, computers and related office equipment
- Keeps as well informed as possible about the school district’s objectives, policies, plans and how library media centers help implement and/or support them
- Maintains a positive collegial relationship with students, parents, staff and community agencies
- Performs such other duties as directed or required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Interest in the education of youth in a public school setting
- Interest in and knowledge of books and other media as they relate to the education of diverse student populations
- Proficiency in word processing and relevant computer skills as well as other modern office equipment and practices
- Demonstrate effective English communication in both oral and written form
- Demonstrate pleasant, patient, outgoing collegial interpersonal relationship skills
- Demonstrate initiative, organizational and time management skills
- Maintain confidentiality
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Hold an Associates or higher Degree or have completed 2 years of study at an institution of higher education.
- Experience in working with large and small groups of elementary age students preferred.
- Must be computer literate, proficient in basic office procedures and the operations of common office equipment and machines.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be deemed necessary, appropriate and acceptable
Working Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in an indoor public school setting in various size spaces and activities with varied numbers of diverse student and adult populations.
