Job Overview

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is an integral caregiver on the patient care team. The PCA will work collaboratively with physicians and other caregivers to assist in providing safe and efficient patient care in the Pre-operative and Post-operative areas. The PCA may be asked to assist in the Operating Room, Central Supply, or at the Registration Desk. He/she will perform other related duties as needed to maintain department cost containment, efficiency, as well as quality performance. Other duties as assigned.


Responsibilities and Duties

1. Actively works to promote and maintain an organizational culture that enhances our standing as the best place to work and receive care.

2. Active engagement in staff meetings, department meetings, in-services, educational requirements, etc.

3. Performs quality control testing, maintenance, and cleaning of patient care equipment/Point of Care testing equipment ensuring all equipment is in safe working order. Accurately records results and maintains appropriate logs.

4. Performs troubleshooting of non-functioning equipment.

5. Demonstrates knowledge of The Surgery Center's current policies and procedures.

6. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of emergency equipment and is knowledgeable in the appropriate emergency protocols.

7. Assists with the patient admission process into the pre-operative area, includes obtaining vital signs, patient height and weight, point of care testing, preoperative shaving, assisting the patient as needed and providing assistance to the RN as needed.

8. Assists with patient discharge needs, includes removing IV, assisting patient in getting dressed, wheeling out in wheelchair.

9. Performs room turnover/cleaning, maintains unit supplies and linens in the Pre/Post-op area.

10. Assists with stripping, cleaning, and turning over the OR suite, as needed.

11. Covers Registration Desk as needed; answers telephone, greets patients and visitors.

12. Contributes to meeting the fluctuating staffing needs of the department as evidenced by flexibility in own assignment and work schedule.

13. Demonstrates initiative and collaborates professionally with caregivers in/out of their department.

14. Promotes teamwork by assisting with the precepting of new caregivers.

15. Identifies areas of conflict, intervenes effectively, or seeks assistance in conflict resolution.


Qualifications

Education Qualifications:

o High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience Qualifications:

o Minimum of one (1) year work experience as a PCA is required.

o Experience in Ambulatory Surgery or Outpatient Surgery preferred.

Certifications:

o Currently holds American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or AHA approved equivalent (or obtains within three (3) months of hire).


Physical abilities:

o Lift 10 lbs. box overhead. Lift and carry 15 lbs. Push/pull 20 lbs. cart.

o Lift and carry 25-35 lbs. Push/pull 50-100 lbs. (ie. empty bed, stretcher)

o Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Push/pull /- 150-200 lbs. (Patients on bed, stretcher) Lateral transfer 150-200 lbs. (ie. Patient)

o Lift over 50 lbs. Carry 80 lbs. a distance of 30 feet. Push/pull > 200 lbs. (ie. Patients on bed, stretcher)
