What are the responsibilities and job description for the Exhibitions Curator position at Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians?
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Exhibits & Collections, the Exhibitions Curator will specialize in the curation and implementation of exhibitions that honor, preserve, and interpret the living cultural heritage of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians and their ancestors. The role extends to curating artwork beyond the institution's permanent collections to include loans from collectors, artists, and other institutions, thereby creating a dynamic, engaging, and educational experience for the community, offsite venues, and in the Lolmen Gallery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Exhibition Research, Writing, and Development: Originate and coordinate exhibitions, working closely with guest curators, artists, and other institutions. This includes research, writing, and content development for each exhibition.
- Exhibition Installation and Oversight: Manage all aspects of exhibition installations, from planning to implementation and deinstallation, ensuring a smooth process and high-quality presentation.
- Community Engagement: Build relationships within the regional cultural arts community to facilitate loans and collaborative opportunities for exhibitions.
- Loan Management: Handle the procurement, paperwork, and logistical coordination for borrowed items featured in exhibitions.
- Budget Management: Track exhibition-related costs and manage designated budgets for exhibitions.
- Event Planning: Plan and implement public programming and events related to exhibitions, including opening receptions, artist talks, and educational workshops.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Director of Exhibits & Collections to ensure proper handling and documentation of loaned items.
- Public Programming and Education: Develop educational materials and programs to accompany exhibitions, enhancing visitor experience and understanding.
- Volunteer and Intern Training: Assist in the training of volunteers and interns in best practices related to exhibition curation and implementation.
- Other Duties as Assigned: Perform other duties related to exhibition and museum programming as assigned by the Director of Exhibits and Collections.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A high school diploma or equivalent (i.e., GED or CHSPE) is required.
- 2 years of experience in the field of Cultural Education, tribal organization, and/or tribal youth.
- 2 years of experience in a gallery or museum setting in exhibits and heritage interpretation.
- Current CA driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.
- Competency with Microsoft Office computer programs.
- Ability to effectively communicate and present information in one-on-one, small group, or large group settings.
- Occasional weekend and evening duties are required for this role.
NATIVE PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
Salary : $69,300 - $87,500
